Mariotta: a draft scenario

Let's say Mariota drops to 10 (Rams). Would you be mad if the Saints trade up to get him, giving up both ones in the process?
You let him sit and learn behind Drew for a year. Next year you trade Drew and get that one back (hopefully more), and have a guy like Mariota ready to go.

i dont want any part of the mariota/winston suckfest
Posted on 3/12/15 at 5:27 pm to High C
That would be awful for the franchise

I wouldn't want him if he fell to 13.
With the new rookie contracts, we shouldn't draft a 1st round replacement until drew leaves.

I don't hate that idea. But if we are grooming a guy I'd rather Hundley or Petty

so are the stupid cliche slinging cowboys. he posts a reasonable scenario, and you feebly attempt to drill him for hit by saying he's a madden GM. Best part is you offer zero, zilch, none, nada, fricking nothing in any way shape or form that could possibly me even mistaken as analysis. Ride 'em, Cowboy!
To the OP's point, only if he would be the heir apparent would it be worth it. I personally am not sold on either of these two QB's, but Mariotta seems like he would be a good fit in our system. If Paeyton felt this guy was the answer, then we should make the move. If not, then wait until the right one comes along.

bad idea. the last thing we need is to be caught with our pants down trying to find a qb. with the fail rate being so high, it's better to take the shots now (only for the right one obviously, not just to have one) in case he turns out to not work. I want a guy ready to take over when Brees leaves; I don't want to wait 1-2 years developing a guy and losing in the process. Screw that

I'm not saying that we shouldn't take shots. I'm saying those shots shouldn't be in the first round

Everyone wants Aaron Rodgers, but that isn't realistic anymore. When is the last time something like that has happened?
You build a roster around a QB then hope it eases the responsibility of the new one with the saved cap space
Also, the fail rate doesn't change just because you draft one this year

fair point, but how many successful qb's actually are late round picks? If Brees were 30 I would agree completely; however, he's nearing the end. I don't believe Mariotta is going to be a great or even very good one, so I am not keen on the idea this season. I do think if next year has one worthy then we should seriously consider if not do it. It's the most important position on the team, so it shouldn't be treated like any of the others.

I don't want to use our two first round picks on a guy that won't even play for at least 2 years. I don't care who he is

I do not want RG4. Hell to the no. Nor do I want JaMarcus Russell 2. (Winston). We are going all in on Brees last few years obviously so let's wait till next year or year after to draft a qb if we even go that route.

Hitting on a first round QB would benefit us 100X more than hitting on another position in round 1. Too much upside to not try at some point. Are we really going to pass up a potential franchise guy because we are too scared to pull the trigger on a 1st round guy?
just playing devils advocate. I'm more of a fan of the later guys

Before I'm run over by the bus again, let me expound a bit. I think that Mariota's skill set compares favorably to that of Kaepernick, with Mariota being superior in intelligence and character. If you don't like what you see, I'd be willing to bet that you could get equal value back by shipping him to Chip Kelly after a year and hanging on to Brees.

I broke down the 1st round picks of the past 10 years the other day. There have been WAAAY more busts than even serviceable QBs.
My point is that the later round QBs may turn out to be bad, but the risk is also much lower. Using 2 first is even more ridiculous

I think we're looking at 4 more years of Drew

Right, but I don't agree with trading up in the draft to get a QB if it costs you all the pieces around him. That just makes his development more difficult.
If you're drafting a 1st round QB, I think you want to take him the year he's going to start these days. You want him playing under that rookie contract for 5 years.

Yes. I'd also be mad if they drafted him at all in the 1st.
We currently have the best leader in football who could run that offense blind.
A dude who gets his plays from cards and relies on frick ups by collegiate defenses due to the sheer number of plays is not going to replace him.

I put this in the other thread too but I want this kid to be Drew's successor.....

1. His idea is stupid..
2. There are no guarantees that we have enough to offer to get the MM without mortgaging our entire draft
3. No guarantees that we'd get enough in return for Brees
4. You're telling the captian of the team and the heart and soul of the city that we are only giving you one more year to win here and then it's goodbye
5. No telling how mariotta will pan out
6. There may be QBs for the future that the organization already has their eyes on
7. The Rams might not want to make the trade
8. We could get into a bidding war with another team
Enough reasons for you??
