I don't care if they draft Mariota or not. I do care that the FO has enough foresight to start finding Brees replacement ASAP and lessens the leverage he has over this team.

For clarification:

Do you want to win one more championship with Brees? If so, it seems illogical to waste a pick on Mariota to sit for years to come.

So, then are you indirectly advocating to just trade Brees now , get some extra high draft picks in addition to the ones we have now, and most probably take your lumps now while rebuilding your brand with a new spread QB? That seems more logical, albeit very risky.

Otherwise, if you draft his replacement now, to sit for 2-3 years, you are basically conceding a possible difference making starter at the #13th spot that could help Brees and this team win now and next couple of years...all for a guy who will be as useful this year and the next as any Tom, Dick or Harry on the practice squad.

You are not helping this team win now by wasting high draft picks on bench warmers while you still have Drew Brees.

Sean Payton is out the freaking door the minute Brees retires. You really think he's sticking around here post Brees? Hell no.

Why even worry about the backup at this point? Brees is the franchise. The windown is about 70 percent shut at this point. There's a small chance that by retooling the line and D, we can make one more good run at it.

The future is now. You do what you can to win now. Post Brees/Payton shouldn't even be a consideration right now. The team will look completely different then and having Mariotta sit on the bench for a few years wouldn't change that.

Everybody keeps using this 2-3 year time frame without any indication that's a fact. Do you think the team is going to take on the $27.4M cap hit for Brees next year?
If he has a bad year, do you think the FO will be anxious to do a 3 year extension? What if Brees wants $15M a year for a 3 year extension with at least half guaranteed?

This coming season will be the true barometer of where this team is headed. Brees will be 37 years old. You know many QBs have won the Superbowl at 37 or older? One...John Elway. If you get someone in now, he'll at least have 1 year behind Brees to learn; that's a hell of a lot better than waiting until you don't have a starter.

So why not just trade Brees now? Odds are that 2nd pick won't have the much needed impact to turn this team around for a championship this year, provided the #13th pick was wasted on next year's project.

So, if the Cleveland offer of 2 first rounders has any legitimacy, it should seem quite enticing to you, right?

Four 1st rounders, 7 players out of the first 78 picks. Good start to a rebuilding job, but could be a cellar dweller at the start.

Can't trade drew now cause of his contract. End of story, plus any other rational logic

Unless you think Mariotta is the next Luck, which he's clearly not, then you do everything you can to win with Brees.

And no, they won't pay Brees $27 million, they'll extend him three more years and reduce the hit. Payton is not trading Brees, they are attached at the hip. When one goes, the other goes imo.

Don't kid yourself. Payton will leave when the team starts losing more than they win...and it won't be his choice at that point.

For the record, I'm all for keeping Brees. I'm just trying to understand the logic of the draft Mariota (or get the next QB now) crew.

If they are saying Brees will only be here one year, they are basically conceding Brees' last year by wasting picks on guys that can't help Brees, and would only distract (tutoring the new guy & media-driven QB controversy stuff).

I just can't see the Saints parting with a future HOFer (without some restructured deal) in favor of a gifted prospect who has so far been inaccurate under center and fails more than he succeeds against stout college defenses.

Great teams, smart teams, they plan for the future while they're on top...that's why they stay on top (see the 49ers, Green Bay and Patriots for examples).
Brady is every bit a future HOFer as Brees and the Patriots drafted his replacement last year....Jimmy Garoppolo. They aren't too concerned about "wasting picks" or all of the distractions. That's smart business.

I get that angle. It's smart.

However, the Pats haven't lost more than 4 games per season since 2009. They can afford the luxury of a backup plan.

The Saints weren't even "on top" in the worst division in football. This 7-9 team need help now.

You are smoking that shite bro. Seek some professional help, you're killing off your brain cells.

quote:

The New Orleans Saints' “window of opportunity” became a popular story line in recent days after quarterback Drew Brees (who turns 35 on Wednesday) admitted that he doesn't know how many more shots he'll get at the Super Bowl.

It also became one of the subjects of coach Sean Payton's messages to players on Monday as they held their final team meeting of the 2013 season.

“I said to our players, ‘You're gonna hear this new buzz word called window.' And honestly the window, as long as I'm head coach here, we're trying to slam it open always,” Payton said. “And so, you can take each individual player and say, ‘When's the window of opportunity?' With regards to a specific player like Drew, I get that. And yet, that window's still all the way open. And I mean that.”

Payton is as competitive & passionate as they come. He isn't going to run away from shite especially with Parcells in his ear. Parcells made a habit of running away from jobs prematurely & later regretting his decision to leave.

quote:

"I regret leaving New England. Had we done things differently ... " Parcells recently told USA TODAY Sports. "I had a good young team there. I hated to leave that team, because I knew what we could do.
"I was absolutely too headstrong. And he might have been a little headstrong, too. I think both Kraft and myself, retrospectively, would have done things a little differently."

LINK

We've had Brees for so damn long now, that idiots like this forget that Payton is QB developing guru. Only a dumbass would think that Payton would run away from the challenge of developing a young, upcoming quarterback. He made Quincy Carter a decent quarterback & was essential in the early development of Tony Romo. We all have been witness to how Brees career exploded with Payton as his tutor.
