I haven't seen it discussed much, so I wanted to get the boards opinion on the back up QBs. A lot of people have touted Ryan Griffin the past few years, but he could be cut at the end of camp. Or be put on the practice squad and picked up by another team. You would have to think that Grayson is a lock. That leaves one spot for McCown or Griffin.

So who do you think sticks around? Or does Grayson do well enough to earn the #2 spot and McCown gets let go and RG4 goes to the PS? Whatcha got?

Black & Gold Roster projections

quote:

Quarterbacks (3): Drew Brees, Luke McCown, Garrett Grayson
Out: Ryan Griffin

It’s going to be a tight race between McCown and Griffin. The vet might have a slight edge heading into the first game. If Brees were to go down, McCown might have the best shot at winning a game or two.

The Advocate

quote:

QB Ryan Griffin

Griffin is another player who can no longer survive on potential alone. With Drew Brees and third-round pick Garrett Grayson locks to make the team, Luke McCown and Griffin have to battle it out for one spot.

McCown and Griffin found themselves in a similar battle last year entering preseason, and McCown came out as the victor despite battling a hand injury. Griffin spent the year on the practice squad, where he could have been picked up by any of the NFL’s other teams.

The possibility remains that neither of these players will make the team. Coach Sean Payton has said it’s too soon to determine whether the rookie will get a “redshirt” year to learn behind the scenes.

If he steps up and shows an ability to handle the job when disaster strikes, then Griffin and McCown could be looking for new jobs.

The TP

quote:

The Saints have four quarterbacks, and there's a chance that all four could still be in the organization upon breaking camp.

Drew Brees will, of course, be the starter, and most assume that rookie Garrett Grayson is guaranteed a roster spot. That leaves the backup battle between incumbent Luke McCown and Griffin, 25, who signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent out of Tulane in 2013.

McCown must make the roster to stick with the Saints. Griffin is still practice-squad eligible.

Has anything come out of camp? I haven't heard much on the back up QB spot.

McCown has a better grip of the team if something were to happen to Brees. They will keep the guy they trust more and that's McCown. Griffin will be on another team by Week 1 of the regular season.

McCown won all the QB challenges by a large margin except the last one.

The problem with that is the challenges don't have pressure from a Defense and over his career McCown has failed miserably at that. RG4 gives this team a young presence and in Preseason last year out shined McCown in all games...

I agree, but I think they trust McCown more. I think they will try to put Griffin on the practice squad, but he will probably get picked up. Just my opinion though.
