Landon Collins as hybrid ss/LB

I started a similar thread on another forum but it lacked thought-out responses with any support.
If he's still there at 31, do you take him? A play-maker in run-support who can also cover TE and RB would be a great addition to our defense.
I can definitely see him playing a lb/ss hybrid role. Browner/Lewis on the ends, vaccarro/byrd at safety and Landon Collins as "big nickel" would be a sick secondary doubling as good run support.
Mike Mayock comparing him to Bucannon:

“I love the way Arizona used him...dime linebacker in their nickel and dime, big enough to take on a run but certainly quick and athletic enough to cover running backs and tight ends, and that’s what I see with Landon Collins.”

I would laugh pretty hard if we drafted him after he burned LSU. Either way, I wouldn't be opposed to it, just so long as use him like we did Vaccaro his rookie year.

Why? Haven't we spent enough on the safety position?

Kenny Vaccaro is still here.

Very low position as far as needs.

In that formation, he replaces a linebacker, so it would help with the linebacker need.
Since he's such a great run defender, and better in pass coverage than most of our LB options, that could be an every down formation

Why not just draft a true LB then? Collins is a safety not a LB

I agree. As an lsu fan I have a strong dislike for him, but I can't deny his talent

He can't play 2 positions at the same time. Although bush can step in the safety role, which is a valid argument, vaccaro Byrd Collins browner and lewis would be bad arse.
I'm not sold on taking Collins, just discussing what if our other targets are gone and he's BPA. (I'm still crossing my fingers for la'el Collins and DGB in the first)

quote:
What is the big nickel package? Every team in the NFL utilizes a traditional nickel package (five defensive backs instead of the four featured in base defenses) as a way to better defend against the pass. Typically, an extra corner will come on to replace a linebacker and will align in the slot to match up with a receiver or tight end. In a big nickel package, the defensive coordinator will instead bring on an extra safety who acts as a hybrid linebacker/cornerback. While the nickel safety is also assigned to cover tight ends and receivers in the slot, he is a more effective run defender and possesses the size, strength and length to match up with the league's increasing number of big-bodied, pass-catching tight ends.

I wouldn't go that direction but versatile players is what I would be aiming for. It's why I like Dupree, La'El, Kendricks, Devin Smith, and Preston Smith as 1st and 2nd round options.

We need every down players on D and Safety is already well-represented. Collins biggest knock is that he is weak in coverage. Why not draft draft a LB with decent cover skills rather than a run stopping safety with poor cover skills?

We could just field an entire defense of hybrid safeties!

Do we really want Roman Harper 2.0 here?
...and no, I'm not talking about the Bama thing, I'm talking about the Safety who plays inside the box like a LB but can't cover for shite.

Ohhhhhh no don't need another Safety that can't cover...

Not sure he's that good to warrant a top pick.

He was smoked on the deep ball a lot in college. His coverage skills are questionable. It's a decent idea OP. I don't want to draft him though.
