Johnathan Hankins, DT, Ohio State

quote:

Analysis: The Saints had a disappointing season, but the problem was mainly on defense. No team was easier to run against consistently than New Orleans, and they need a clogger up the middle, a player who can free up linebackers to make plays. Hankins ran a little hot and cold, and the tape doesn't show a player who will penetrate and use quickness to beat interior blockers, but he can eat up double-teams, move down the line well and make the players around him better. The Saints need help in several spots on defense, but they really need a player who can help deliver more third-and-long situations, and Hankins could be that guy.

I disagree with his analysis. Bunkley and Hicks can be capable in eating space.

We need an elite pass rusher, a competent OLB, and a Safety that can make plays.

I think our run D problems might be because of our LB corps.

But Kiper might have a point.

I really hope we don't use our first round pick on a DT. From past experiences we haven't done too well picking good DTs in the forst round. I really think we need a game changer on defense. Not sure who, but I do not think it will come from the defensive tackle position.

Pass rush or bust. Don't care what position he plays. If he can get to the QB he could have been a kicker in college for all I care.

I feel exactly the same way. I want "Playmakers", pure and simple.

don't know about that. Teams had the most success running to the outside instead of up the middle. And it was usually when we were in a nickel or dime defense. When we were in a 4-3, we actually did good I thought.

I agree, we have capable DTs, what we need is a pass rusher or DB.

Solid pick, problem is we need to upgrade at a few positions on D to turn it around.

I'm not so sure of your statement's validity, but yes there were many big runs ripped off on the edge, especially on the left side (ughem! Will Smith!). I do recall though runs up the middle that gashed us as well, and it was quite consistent that we were a complete mess on the line whether it be right middle or left.

Kiper isn't wrong in saying we need a DT. We do! The question remains if this guy is the one we need. I don't like reading him state "Hankins ran a little hot and cold, and the tape doesn't show a player who will penetrate and use quickness to beat interior blockers." Well hell, what's the point of a DT if he can't beat the blockers?!?!?! We aren't looking for a NT to take on double teams in a 3-4; we need DT's that can shed blocks as well as maintain position against them.

I guess I'm thinking more about the Panther games in particular then. That read option they ran absolutely killed us. Those were toughest games to watch in my opinion. They ran all over us.

The question is, which on the guys in Kiper's mock would you want if not Hankins?

Sam Montgomery?
Ansah?

Trade down in the 1st and take Minter? John Jenkins? Margus Hunt?

Surprise the world and take another TE to go with Graham? Or maybe a WR? Our FO has done weirder things in the draft.

I'd rather have a DE who is a pure pass rusher, but Hankins is solid if we're going to take a DT.

I see where he has Chance Warmack going #7 overall to the Cardinals. That pick would definitely make sense since their O-line sucks but guards just don't get taken that high.

also fwiw, Kiper had one of our draft picks pegged last year.

In his FINAL mock, he had us taking Akiem Hicks in the 3rd round.

Holy Christ - look at who that #32nd pick is going to?!

Back to topic though - do you guys predominately agree that you need a DLine guy in your 1st round? I wonder if your DBs and Safety's would be better with a better pass rush - OR if you need better secondary guys to help aid your pass rush. Lots of teams with this dilemma.
