Kicking The Can...

Fleeners contract is extremely back loaded and the Saints are eating Crow for all of their dead money from back loaded contracts from previous seasons. Does anyone have the salary cap hits and dead money numbers for 2017 and 2018? Maybe just the top 5 biggest salary cap hits for those 2 years. I know Drew will get extended and we will have to resign Terron next season as well as maybe Vaccaro. I just want to see if maybe Fleeners contract is favorable if he explodes and we don't have much on the books in the future. Thanks.

With Brees closer to the end than the beginning, wouldn't backloading make sense at this point?

Back loading Brees contract makes sense, I just hate how we do it for every single contract and have dead money and no player down the road. I really just want to see our cap situation for 2017 and 2018 maybe with some predicted in house signings...I just don't have time to do the research and was wondering if someone on here already knew.

The tight end received an $8 million signing bonus with $18 million in total guarantees, according to a source.

Have you seen what our Cap numbers look like after 2016??? Loomis may not be the best evaulator of talent, but the dude is a wizard with the books

We have Brees for maybe 3 more years at a decent level. After that, odds are there will be some dark days while we try to find a capable starter.
I'd keep kicking the can until Brees is done.

Not looking forward to those days at all... For every Aaron Rodgers situation you have 6 teams like Houston, Washington, NYJ, etc who are eternally looking for a good QB

That's what I am trying to get from you people...

We are "eating crow" because of Galette. He is the main reason for the large amount of dead money last year and this year.
And it was unexpected dead money because we did not plan to cut him last year. He was a model citizen until he got paid and then flipped a switch. At the moment he accounts for just shy of half our dead money this year and I believe a third of it last year.

There's a reason he went undrafted.
And he tended to have a bad attitude.

I actually meant to put quotes around that but was typing quickly. I just meant that his off field behavior was not noticeable until he got paid, unless you count twitter.

We currently have about $3 mil in space this year (assuming Kelemete got a similar deal to Hooman, so give or take about half a mil).
Next year with a projected cap of $166 mil we have about $81 mil in space ($80 mil if Kelemete has about a $1 mil cap hit). This is with 31 (32 with Kelemete) players under contract.
So we are set to make some big moves next year even if Brees has a $30 mil hit when he gets his extension. Armstead, Unger, and Vaccaro are the biggest name FAs we have that year.
$80 mil is way more then enough to sign those three and extend Brees and still have a shitload left.

Awesome, exactly what I was looking for.
I love how cutting Browner saves us 2.25M and signing Fleener costs us 2.4M in 2016.

We don't get Browner's full savings yet. In June we'll get another $1.3 mil in cap space.
But the $3 mil number (assuming Kelemete has a similar deal to Hooman) is currently correct.

We actually have a ton of space in the next few years (as seen in the above post).
Kicking the can right now is the right move. The cap is going to keep growing at this massive pace, and we have tons of space already on top of that. The best thing we can do now is sign backloaded contracts and put everything around Brees we can.

I like Loomis and all, but have you seen the amount of dead money we have this year?
Compare that number to teams like Denver.
Dead money is the ticket to not being competitive IMO.
I'll say this till I'm blue in the face, but we need to get a deal done with Armstead now.
Extend Unger a few years as well.
That's where we should be spending our money.
I have no problem letting Vaccaro hit the market.

There is $8M signing bonus over 5 years and there is only fully guaranteed money in the first two years. It is $18M guaranteed, but $3M or so is only guaranteed against injury in year 3. So only ~$14.7M is fully guaranteed and only in years 1 and 2. It is basically taking the salary from this year and putting it into next year when all of our dead money is gone and we have cap space or spreading it across 5 years at our option.
Fleenee is guaranteed to be on the roster for 2 years. After that they can cut him with no real issue. If he does play well in the first 2 years, then the Saints have the option to keep him for ~$6.4M each year for the following 3 years.
It's not a great contract, but it's not a horrible contract and look at what the WR's are getting.

It's a 2.4 cap hit this year, maybe around 7 ish or bit more next year. This is a 2 year try out. He's got a 3.4 roster bonus in march 2018, if things don't go well, we get out of deal in 2 years with a very marginal cap penalty. If he pans out, he's worth every penny. Coby Fleener is replacing Jimmy Graham in this offense. He's a red zone target we missed last year. Tight End vertical threat will stretch middle of field for us. As of now, only 14.6 guaranteed, stretching 1.6 mill per year over 5 years his signing bonus at the moment. HooMan is replacing Watson, Coby is our jimmy, compare this deal to Jimmy's deal two years ago when cap was MUCH lower, its a damn bargain.
