Drew Brees was a Free Agent.

Keenan Lewis has 3 years left on his deal.

Not trolling at all.

Let's say Loomis plays hard ball.

Lewis holds out. He gets hammered with fines and doesn't collect a penny. He has to come back by week 10 to be considered an accrued season. He has 3 years left on his contract. He'd lose a ton of money.

No agent would advise this.

So being an elite player that holds out = fine
Being a very good player (on a very cheap contract) that holds out = count?

This probably has a lot to do with letting Lofton go. We have to pay him.

To an extent, I agree.

First, let him calm down. I can see the Saints converting his $700k yearly roster bonus into a signing bonus b/c it doesn't impact the cap. That would be $2.1 million up front for him.

I can also see us converting part of his $4.25 million next year. He isn't going to get the whole thing guaranteed, but I think some good faith on the Saints part could go a long ways

He's 2 years into a 5 year deal.

No way I'd adjust anything. You'd be telling every other player to do the same when they wanted more security. Terrible idea for saints managemen.

Did Drew Brees get on Instagram while under contract and say he needs to take his talents elsewhere? No

And the money isn't the point for the Lewis situation. It is his going to reporters and instagram out of nowhere bitching about it. Brees made Sean Peyton and the Saints Franchise.

He can go shite on Loomis desk if he wants.

All the while our secondary gets their shite pushed in for those 10 weeks. All because we didn't want to "give in" to a great player and great hometown guy asked for his very low paying contract be guaranteed. The locker room is probably on edge as is. Not taking care of Lewis is going to send it into turmoil.

Not every player is as good as lewis at such a valuable position.

Mr. Lewis needs to grow up and learn how to use an Agent. He is showing exactly why players need them, because they are stupid, egotistical, and irrational.

That doesn't help him in any way. And it would only free up ~$500k for us this season. It would be a meaningless move.

this is what most people forget

this is not a video game. the players affected are real people and the ones left are real people reacting to new situations

we're telling our team and the NFL that our roster is completely unstable. it's totally understandable that lewis wants guaranteed stability

Worth it? How? It would be about $13 million in additional guarantees on top of the $10.3 million he already received. So, almost all of his $25.5 million contract would have been guaranteed.

Agreed, considering how they've blown up the team this year after last year's debacle....and trading their #1 receiver....no one is safe.

and that's not a good thing

especially for a small market team who isn't a prime FA destination (who can't draft well and who has to rely on FAs)
