Wanted thoughts.

Saints draft

1. Derek Carr QB Fresno State
2. Jeremiah Attaochu LB Georgia Tech
3. Stanley Jean-Baptiste CB Nebraska
4. Robert Herron WR Wyoming

Really didn't know what to think of the Carr pick but it's different.

If they really take a qb it would indicate to me that Brees has probably let let them know how much longer he plans to play.

We may as well let RG take our first round pick if we draft a QB. frick that, unless Andrew Luck is sitting at 27, you can't waste a pick on someone who is going to sit the bench for 5 years.

Loomis/Payton will never let that happen.

The QB from Tulane seems to be the guy they are grooming unless someone like maybe Murray from UGA or Mettenbreger falls to the 4th round they will take one of them for sure. I think if Peyton has to draft someone they or getting a prototype QB after Brees

Agree 100%. If they take a QB high it means Drew told them he will retire at the end of this year or next. I'd guess he's got a litter of children now and probably wants to start spending more time at home with them and his wife's sweaty yoga pants

It aint just this kid anymore. You'd think Drew would want at least a ring per kid before he retires. I mean this little dude will hold this over his brothers for life. He's pointing right at his future siblings. Saying "You... I'm better than you. And Dad knows it."

Then brees is all "Yeah, what can you do. I love you more than my other children."

As for this:

quote:

Mettenbreger falls to the 4th round they will take him for sure.

I dunno.. Brees is 35. I know he has said he feels good, but hoping he plays into his 40s is a bit of a stretch. I would hope he would play at least 2 more seasons, and I'd be very happy with 3. The fact is, there is no norm with this. Just because Brady and Manning will play into their 40s means nothing. I don't want our guy to play too long - I want him to be medically sound after he retires.

That said, I could see us taking a QB this year. I could see the teams thought process to get there.. Especially if Drew has expressed any honesty to the FO about how long he intends to play for. This years draft is deep - really, really deep. And for the first time in a while, we don't have any SUPER glaring needs. We can all agree we could use a corner, WR, safety and tackle, and maybe a center, but I expect the team to address most of those in FA, and I think a few backups from previous years will step up into starting roles well. The point is - we are not DESPERATE at any position. If the season started tomorrow, we wouldn't be completely screwed... That is the situation you WANT to be in. It's very likely we won't be in that situation again until long after Drew retires. If we are going to attempt to take a QB for the future, now would be the time to do it, rather than wait for Drew to retire and then suffer through a 3-13 season in order to get a high pick for another QB.

I'm not saying they'll do it. I'm not even interested in Carr. But it wouldn't shock me if they did take a QB. I know there would be a lot of rage here..

I think Murray is going to surprise a lot of people. Will never say that to my friends back in Georgia though.
Kid has great mobility in the pocket and a nice arm to go with it. You give him a few years learning Payton's offense and Drew Brees mentoring him, he will be a deadly qb.

Not necessarily. See: Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre; Tom Brady and Ryan Mallett.

If Carr is available at 27 somebody in the top 10 of the second round is gonna call us to move to that pick to get him.

They're grooming him to be the back up. I would be shocked if he actually ends up being the plan for the future.

Have thought this all along. Maybe not 2016, but definitely when he retires.

It would be a nice surprise for sure.
Looking forward to see how he plays after a year of understudy.
If they sign McCown early in free agency then we will know.

Because of the salary cap and new CBA, most teams try to maximize the amount of time a QB is starting on a rookie contract.

We won't pick a high round QB until there is a very clear indication that Brees will be gone within a year.

It's not like we are investing in a top 5 QB. This is a late 1st, early 2nd QB. Same place Drew was drafted. If the value is there, and you like the QB better than other players, you have to take it.

As for sitting, I wrote this in another thread and stand by it.

quote:

Vick was first overall and Brees was a round later. Who would you rather have?

Alex Smith was first overall and Rodgers was the 24th pick. Who would you rather have?

Manning and Luck were the 1st overall picks. But so was Carson Palmer and JaMarcus Russell.

Look at that class of Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb, Akili Smith, Daunte Culpepper and Cade McNown. Aaron Brooks was taken in the 4th round of that year and did better than half those guys.

And a lot of starting QBs didn't start right away either. Tom Brady, Ben Rothlesburger, Chad Henne, Philip Rivers, Tony Romo, Carson Palmer, Colin Kaepernick and Drew Brees. (Drew was picked in the second round and didn't start a single game until his second year.) Eli has won two superbowls and shared time with Kurt Warner his first year. And look at what Kurt Warner had to go through to get a job.

Look at two years ago with Luck, RG III and Russell Wilson. In four years we could be saying how great Kirk Cousins is because he won a Super Bowl with the Cardinals or Rams.

I'd rather get our QB of the future a year too early, than 15 years of rotating top 5 QBs.

Difference is Rodgers fell from the top 10 to them so they were getting value. Mallett was a 3rd rder. This would be the Saints reaching in the 1st for a guy who's not gonna play for a few years. Would be terrible.
