Josh Katzenstein's Mock Draft v5.0
Posted on 4/26/17 at 11:43 am

No. 1: Cleveland Browns -- DE Myles Garrett, Texas A&M
No. 2: San Francisco 49ers --RB Leonard Fournette, LSU
No. 3: Chicago Bears -- S Jamal Adams, LSU
No. 4: Jacksonville Jaguars -- DL Jonathan Allen, Alabama
No. 5: Tennessee Titans -- S Malik Hooker, Ohio State
No. 6: New York Jets -- CB Marshon Lattimore, Ohio State
No. 7: San Diego Chargers -- DL Solomon Thomas, Stanford
No. 8: Carolina Panthers -- RB Christian McCaffrey, Stanford
No. 9 Cincinnati Bengals -- DE Derek Barnett, Tennessee
No. 10 Buffalo Bills -- TE O.J. Howard, Alabama
Round 1 (No. 11), CB Marlon Humphrey, Alabama
At the start of the draft process, Humphrey was widely regarded as one of the top three cornerback prospects, along with Lattimore and Washington's Sidney Jones. As more pundits provided their opinions, other cornerbacks became hot names and started leap Humphrey in the public opinion.
But, Humphrey will be the one who probably goes in the first half of the first round because of his ideal height-weight-speed combination as well as swagger at a position where attitude is necessary. He needs to improve his technique, but at 20 years old, he'll have time to adjust.
Round 1 (No. 32) EDGE T.J. Watt
After grabbing a cornerback with their first pick, the Saints find a pass rusher with their second. Don't compare Watt to his incomparable brother, J.J. T.J. is a much different player, but he has a nose for the ball as well as the ability to rush and cover. The Saints need a dose of speed off the edge, and the younger Watt could provide it.
Round 2 (No. 42 overall): S Josh Jones, N.C. State
This is a name that hasn't really been linked to the Saints through the pre-draft process, but it's one who should be on the radar for fans. Yes, New Orleans brought Rafael Bush back after cutting Jairus Byrd, but it's a cheap one-year deal.
Jones has elite athleticism for a safety, and his aggressive style of play would fit on a Saints team lacking defensive playmakers.
Round 3 (No. 76 overall): DE Tarell Basham, Ohio University
The Saints haven't practiced this in a while, but there's a common saying around the NFL that a team can never have too many pass rushers. Given the depth of pass rushers in the draft, the Saints should take two and try to solve their depth issues for the long haul.
Basham might have a steeper learning curve than guys from bigger conferences than the MAC, but he has potential with his quickness and size.
Round 3 (No. 103 overall): OT Will Holden, Vanderbilt
Sean Payton has said he wants the Saints to add a young offensive lineman. Right now, tackle is more of a long-term need than guard. Holden has experience playing both tackle spots and shouldn't take long to develop after playing in the SEC.
Round 6 (No. 196 overall): CB Brian Allen, Utah
Yes, just like defensive end, the Saints double up on cornerbacks. Allen has the size -- 6-foot-3, 215 pounds -- and length teams desire. He's also a former wide receiver, so coming out of the Pac-12, it's easy to make the Richard Sherman comparison. If he's half as good as Sherman, this would be a great sixth-round pick.
Round 7 (No. 229 overall) RB I'Tavius Mathers, MTSU
Mathers was the pick here in my first two mock drafts, and the addition of Adrian Peterson doesn't change this possibility. Mathers could provide help as a receiver and kickoff returner, and he has a nose for the end zone, scoring 20 total touchdowns in 2016.

if it plays out like this then #11 is on the trading block to the highest bidder to take a QB ahead of the browns.
hopefully a team in the 20's for their pick plus a 2nd and maybe even a 3rd, if its someone like Arizona for 13 then swap firsts plus either their 2nd or their 3rd pick too

All the local beat reporters seem to be circling the wagons on Marlon Humphrey.

If we draft Humphrey at 11, I swear to God..... his own Bama fans think thats stupid....
He can be had at 15-20

Frick...I'll be prepared for the melt with plenty of alcohol

quote:Could hurt the value of the pick though if they end up trading up into the top 10 to grab Trubisky. Teams could still be calling to get ahead of AZ at 13 though, I guess....But yes, I agree.

If the first 10 picks play out like that and the Saints don't have any partners to trade down with, that's basically a worst case scenario. Really have to hope for a QB or 2 to go top 10.

That is a horrible mock. Leonard at 2??? The 49ers have Carlos Hyde they don't need Fournette they need a Defense
Posted on 4/26/17 at 11:55 am to burdman
I don't see anyway that AT LEAST one of them aren't taken before pick 11. I think more than likely 2 will be off the board come that time. And by think, I mean hope!
quote:Have been seeing a lot of people state that point recently, and personally completely disagree. Hyde doesn't hold a match to Fournette, and definitely shouldn't be the reason they don't take him. Whether they do or not, who knows, but having Hyde shouldn't matter. IMO.
The 49ers have Carlos Hyde they don't need Fournette

Would be 1000x better of an idea than drafting Marlon at 11.

And you take the trade haul minus the first and go get Butler.

This is literally the fricking opposite of what we need, we can't coach DBs up man

quote:To me it shows how incompetent our local reporting is. As soon as one website who claimed to have "inside info" declared the Saints had strong interest in Humphrey, our lazy local reporters jumped on it like they knew something. Heck, Fletcher updated his "mock" within a couple hours to change to Humphrey. Not a one of them had ever mentioned Humphrey's name previously in connection to the Saints.
All the local beat reporters seem to be circling the wagons on Marlon Humphrey.

I'm all for TJ Watt at 32, but Humphrey at 11?
I'd much rather see that pick made around the 15-19 mark and see us pick up an extra 2nd rounder that way we can double dip at CB and pass rush again later
