Its been a long time ago but as i recall it was something like draft the big men linemen in first round as the big fast guy the most rare body type an in the 2nd round best mid size such as linebacker or tightend.3rd round best skill player such as wr-cb-ss etc, only a qb in first two rounds if you see him as a starting nfl qb.

Finks actually drafted a bunch of skill position players in the early rounds and they were pretty terrible at it.
'86 - Hilliard #31 pick Mayes #57 (They also drafted Barry Word at #62, how nuts is that?)
'87- Lonzel Hill #40
'88- Ironhead #24 Perriman #52
'89- Robert Massey #46
'90- Vince Buck #44
'91- Wesley Carrol #42
'92- Vaughn Dunbar #21

didn't Finks draft Vaughn Dunbar real early one year?

i think maybe they even picked Fred McAfee and Wesley Carroll in the same year back-to-back. Just can't remember the rounds but they were probably high round picks

Not everything Jim Finks did was smart.

Mr. Butts would not be a good choice:

Both fantastic players. Why is this being criticized?

Ironhead was worth the pick. He averaged 4 yards a carry but wasn't given the ball enough (does this sound familiar?).

Jim Finks is insanely over-rated.

The guy who gets almost no credit and deserves most of it is the GM before him- Bum Phillips.

He drafted/brought in pretty much all the stars of the late 80's Saints- Bobby Hebert, Rickey Jackson, Morten Andersen, Eric Martin, Hoby Brenner, Brett Maxie, Brian Hansen, and Jim Wilks (forget Colston, Wilks is the best-ever Saints late-rounder- Bum found him in the 12th round!!!).

That's hard to argue against. It didn't hurt that he was a "players' coach" and players wanted to be here.

Probably one of the stupidest things ever said on this board.

1986 Draft

Round Overall Player Position Birthdate College
1 6 Jim Dombrowski OG 10/19/1963 Virginia
2 31 Dalton Hilliard RB 01/21/1964 Louisiana State
3 57 Rueben Mayes RB 06/06/1963 Washington State
3 60 Pat Swilling LB 10/25/1964 Georgia Tech
3 62 Barry Word RB 07/17/1964 Virginia
4 88 Kelvin Edwards WR 07/19/1964 Liberty
5 115 Reggie Sutton DB 02/15/1965 Miami
6 142 Bob Thompson WR 09/09/1962 Youngstown State
7 173 Gill Fenerty RB 08/24/1963 Holy Cross
8 200 Filipo Mokofisi LB 10/22/1962 Utah
9 226 Merlon Jones LB 09/25/1964 Florida A&M
10 253 Jon Dumbauld DE 02/14/1963 Kentucky
11 284 Patrick Swoopes DT 03/04/1964 Mississippi State
12 311 Sebastian Brown WR 03/22/1963 Bethune-Cookman

Personal note: Reggie Sutton was an awesome player as well. He just had a little trouble staying out of trouble with the NFL.

LOL at your citing ONE DRAFT to justify your silliness.

frick, if you draft 4 rb's you're bound to hit on a couple that have mildly successful NFL careers.

They both had pro bowl years, neither was ever all-pro.

Yes, they were good not great and it's still insane that the Saints took 3 RBs in the first 62 picks of a draft then drafted another RB in the 1st rd two years later.

This wasn't about criticizing I was listing the offensive players they drafted in the early rounds and for the most part those picks were not good.
