Is this the best secondary we've had under Sean Payton?

On paper at least, this DB unit looks amazing. They key is going to be health, as is usually the case. For the first time in a long time, I feel really confident about our defensive backs.

With Breaux improving and a healthy Keenen Lewis, I think this is the best starting CB tandem we've had during Payton's tenure. I think Swann and PJ will both end up being starting caliber corners as well, if they stay healthy. The 5th CB spot is still up for grabs, but if I had to guess, I'd say Brian Dixon gets it. You could do worse for a 5th CB. Ken Crawley is also in the mix for that 5th or 6th spot.

I remember when our safeties were atrocious. Well this year, I think we have the best depth at safety we've probably ever had. Byrd is finally healthy at the start of camp and I think Dennis Allen could get Byrd back to playing the way he did Buffalo. You have Vonn Bell backing him up and learning from him. Kid picked off Drew Brees in his first TC practice ever! Then at SS, you have the monster Vaccaro starting and Allen will have him moving all over the field, just like his rookie year. He is most effective in that role. I expect Vaccaro to have his best season yet, which is saying something, since he was 2nd on the team in totals tackles, last year. Then, there's the new addition of Erik Harris, who will be backing up Vaccaro this year. All reports from mini-camp and TC have been very positive on him so far. I don't want to get overly optimistic too soon, but I think we may have found another Canadian gem, like Breaux, in Erik Harris. Add in the veteran leadership of Roman Harper, who has been to the promised land and I think our secondary is extremely talented and deep. I think we carry 5 safeties, unless Alden Darby really shows out in TC and preseason.

I think we improved each unit on defense this year, but I think the secondary will be the best of them all. What do y'all think?

I agree with all that but I am waiting to see if Lewis is 100%.

2009: Greer, Porter, Harper, Sharper and Jenkins were the best secondary we've had under Payton.

I don't think this group is that good. If Vonn Bell can be an impact player and if Lewis can stay healthy then maybe they can compete with that group

You can have the best secondary in the league ,but if you can't generate a pass rush than they will be mostly ineffective.

It just might be.

Someone pointed out 2009 as the best, but that group wasn't all that great. They got turnovers but gave up a lot of yards. I guess it depends on what metric you're going by.

2010 and 2013 we a lot more stingy.

Other than the fact that Vaccaro isn't a beast and is just an average player, I agree with everything

Darren Sharper and his nose for the ball makes 09's hard to beat.

I hope 2016's does

Yeah, since we haven't seen them play a down yet. Makes sense.

Truthfully, it really doesnt matter how good the secondary is if the passrush hasn't improved. That is the biggest unknown facing this defense and ultimately the team as a whole right now.

We haven't seen PJ Williams or Erik Harris play yet so you are wrong plus Keenan Lewis started last season hurt & tried to play through it before having to shut it down. Secondly, that was in a totally different scheme under Rob Ryan who has a reputation for overloading his secondary players when it comes to their responsibilities inside his scheme. Breakdowns in coverage have been a major issue the last 2 seasons. There is a lot of talent & potential with this secondary. The unknowns are how will they all gel together & what will Dennis Allen ask them to do scheme wise. Until we see them in action, it would be very foolish to assume to expect the same ole, same ole.

I think this secondary could be pretty good, but we don't have anyone close to Sharper's level as far as a playmaker in the group. His level of play in 2009 was incredible.

That 2009 secondary mainly created turnovers, they didn't shut down the opposing teams' passing game very often. Our secondary this year has much better depth, at CB and safety. If our guys stay healthy, which is a huge if, then this year's secondary will be much better than '09, IMO. Bear in mind, I'm just making this assertion based on our roster now. They have to stay healthy and prove it on the field, before we can say definitively which unit was better.

Oh? You've seen this unit take the field under the new DC? Well could you enlighten the rest of us on exactly how they look and where they rank as a unit?

If they can stay healthy and Byrd could give us just half of what he used to be, then this will be a lights out secondary.

Whoa buddy.... I really like this unit that we have. Especially Williams and Swann.

I was just merely stating that 2009 had the best secondary in the Payton era. I know the system was different but Greer Porter and Sharper were clutch as hell that season. There's a lot of unproven on this team

No you weren't. You compared a unit yet to play a down together vs a SB unit predicated on turnovers. This secondary could be shite or all pro. We have nothing to go by yet.
