Some of you guys truly have an irrational hatred of the media. I can understand hating the Skip Baylesses and Jemele Hill's of the world, but the local beat writers are just trying to make a living and Payton treats them like trash. It's low class.

Anyway, your hatred for media is blinding you from what's happening here. In a major market like NY or Philly this would be major news and Payton wouldn't get away with this mystery crap surrounding Byrd.

My theories are as follows:

- Byrd's docs and the Saints docs aren't seeing eye to eye and Byrd is taking his doc's sides regarding discomfort.

- Byrd doesn't have a passion to play anymore and they are actively working on a settlement. Byrd is going to try to get all or most of that signing bonus. Saints will play hardball with him. They have no choice. Byrd is emboldened by the fact that his boy Junior was let go despite the amount of money still owed, so he thinks he can do the same.

Either way, it's not good. One thing is just about guaranteed. Byrd will not be playing week 1. What a terrible offseason last year was.

Also, I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised to find out we HAVE been fining him all along. But Payton's refusal to talk about it is hiding it. Hell, maybe he's acted like such a baby they are asking him to stay away who knows? All I know is that currently, it's a lot of wasted money.

This goes against this:

quote:

Byrd is going to try to get all or most of that signing bonus.

Because he'd lose 25% if his signing bonus

Also:

Is a salary cap issue that would be reported to the nflpa and would be public knowledge. We'd by getting 1/17th of his season's pay for every preseason game missed on top of getting a piece of that signing bonus

Good try, but the NFL owners protected themselves from your theories in the latest CBA

I'm a Bills fan and he had similar issues in Buffalo with disagreement with doctors. In Buffalo, it was plantar fascitis which is very treatable. However, Byrd suffered from the malady for 2 years and it flared up when he was unhappy with his contract status.

It first started on the last year of his contract and was an issue throughout camp. It was suspected by many fans that he did have a problem, but his exuberance to get back was affected by the Bills not offering as much money as he wanted in a contract extension.

The next year when the Bills tagged him he had another case of flare up of plantar fascitis. Given his wealth, the resources available to him medically, and the nature of PF...it strained belief that the condition was serious enough to prevent him from playing.

Keep in mind, Byrd maintained that he was not "holding out" and it was a medical reason that he wasn't playing.

We had endless debates about whether it was real. There was no real way to know. Byrd wasn't treated by team doctors and his treatment went through a personal physician. There were leaks that the Bills may have disagreed on the severity of the issue.

He came back in time for the season to count (a couple games early even) and signed with the Saints the next offseason.

The Bills had no chance of signing him. They offered him a contract that would have put in the top 5, but he maintained that he wanted to be the highest paid.

Byrd was not shy about talking about his situation and that he had to take of himself and wasn't willing to take risks with his health that could impact his life or earning potential.

In short, Byrd is a mercenary. I'd be willing to wager if the Saints came up with some guaranteed money to restructure, he'd feel much healthier.

Of course, just find it funny how way back in March he was good to go.

That's why the talk of it being reasonable that he's mentally not ready was absolutely absurd.

Byrd IS A LOSER! He is just cashing the checks and not worried about playing BUT the Saints have themselves to blame. Who the hell gives a Safety all that money??? Unless you are Ronnie Lott, John Lynch, or Steve Atwater you never pay a Safety that much. Safeties as long as they can tackle and cover a #4 receiver they are good to go. The Saints messed up big time giving that dude a huge contract!

This isn't the 70's. Safeties have become much more important in the pass heavy NFL.
LINK

Safeties are paramount even in schemes that don’t regularly manufacture pressure. Seattle’s corners couldn’t exert suffocating physicality in press-man coverage if they didn’t have the game’s rangiest centerfielder, Earl Thomas, behind them. Most zone schemes rely on safeties to be hard-hitting intimidators or primary read-and-react pass-stoppers. In basic zone, you don’t necessarily need a dynamic safety, but you can’t have a porous one. (Just ask the 2013 Bears). But basic zone schemes are being used less and less today’s NFL due to the rise in multifaceted passing offenses, which have forced the safety positions to evolve.

Byrd was on pace to be an all-time great before coming here. He led the NFL in turnovers during his career

The Patriots and Seahawks. They have the 2 highest paid safeties in the league...

Forgive me if this was mentioned before in this thread, but I just "heard" something from "them" that Byrd is mulling retirement and that he and the Saints are discussing a settlement. Anyone in the know hear anything like this?

ESPN 100.3 were saying there will be a major story breaking tomorrow. I wonder if this is it?

That's probably the best case scenario for the Saints.

His retirement would be very, very bad for the Saints cap situation. It would be very similar to the Junior deal.

While retired players have to return the unearned portion of their signing bonus to the team, the cap is treated as if the player is traded or released.

Byrd's $2m 2015 base salary is guaranteed. This happened when he was on the roster on the 3rd day of the league year, which was sometime in March. We cannot recover this. We would have been freed of it if it were not guaranteed and could have carried over that $2m into next season.

Byrd's retirement will result in $8m being accelerated onto 2016's cap. We would be free of his $7.4m base salary and $100k workout bonus. This means that his retirement would COST us $500k next offseason compared to his still being on the roster. Not a ton of money by itself, but there would be no cap relief until 2017.

His retirement would lead to $14.8m in total dead money spread out over the next two seasons to go along with Junior's $17m, Graham's $9m, and Grubbs's $6m.

That's $47m in dead money over two seasons. That's more than Brees will be making. Obviously this is speculative, and Byrd retiring wouldn't be something the team could have predicted, but that would be bad.

You sure about that?

I was under the impression that anything recovered would be added back to the cap

Also, it changes if he was refusing to play, because then we can def get some of it back.

Edit: you take a cap hit but also get a cap credit back for any portion of the signing bonus that can be obtained

"News: Byrd (knee) may be a candidate for the regular-season PUP list, according to Mike Triplett of ESPN.com. (Tue Sep 1)

Spin: Saints head coach Sean Payton has relayed optimism throughout training camp, yet Byrd still hasn't been able to practice. If he's placed on the regular-season PUP list, the three-time Pro Bowler will be ineligible for the first six games of the season, leaving Rafael Bush as the likely starter next to Kenny Vaccaro.

ESPN Fantasy Projection: At his best Byrd is a ball-hawking beast capable of creating chaos in the passing lanes. A balky back limited the Oregon product to just four games in his Saints' debut, but the larger sample of turnovers blended with healthy tackle production keeps him in the DB3 discussion."

Byrd just enjoys cashing checks without having to worry about going out and hitting anyone.

Put him on the PUP for all I care. Let the dude heal up all the way if he's still apparently injured.
