Is anyone else optimistic after how the defense played?

I don't think the defense had a game this effective since that first year Rob Ryan was here when it looked like he would be the savior. If they can continue that kind of play, and the offense gets to playing more like week 1, the Saints could beat quite a few teams. And, the difference between 0-2 and 2-0 for this team is a couple of plays at this point.

the problem is, once you go 0-2, you pretty much are out of the playoffs.

I don't know where you get this. We are one game out of the lead for our division and we only have 14 games to make it up. Oh and in this time we play all three of the teams in our division, twice.

Look up the % of teams in the NFL that get to the playoffs after starting 0-2.

That and Payton's history when starting slow and it's not looking great for the playoffs.

As for optimism about the defense, it was nice but we've seen these aberrations before.

I feel a little better about things, but the NFL is always about exploiting matchups, so one week doesn't necessarily carries over. I think creating a winning culture does and that is what we need.

I actually never thought that the Saints were going to challenge for the division, so I am more concerned with how we are doing when compared to the rest of the league.

Can the Saints still get to 10-6? Well if they do it will mean going 4-4 for the first 8 and 6-2 over the last 8 which is possible.

I think 10-6 makes the playoffs and gives you a building block toward 2017 when everyone returns with more cap money and draft picks to spend.

I think its something like 12% but the teams that go 2-0 are only like 54% and most of the NFC is sitting at 1-1. The reason 0-2 teams never seem to go is they are usually really bad teams. This year the 12% includes teams who flat suck like Chicago and teams who are a couple of plays away from being 2-0 like us. If we can right the ship in the next two weeks and finish the first quarter of the season 2-2, I think we will be in a position to make some noise in the back half of the schedule.

We aren't an elite team yet but if things start clicking we can go 10-6 and squeek in. Very close to being 2-0 and you're right the fact we have all of our divisional games left and are just one game back is very promising. Carolina's defense is not last year's defense

I was talking to a Carolina fan yesterday who knows football, and he was saying that their front 4 pressure has been very weak so far this season.

Encouraging to hear.

That's how it is pretty much every year.

Yes, I'm optimistic but cautiously so. Big thumbs up to the D on the overall effort Sunday but I worry that it's not easily replicable. 3 turnovers are hard to come by and the Giants sure moved the ball a lot for a team that only scored 9 offensive points. I still see a big problem with a CB corps that is depleted by injury.

It's obviously the best we've played on D in a while but I'll need to see more before I take it as anything other than a fluke

They have played better in the first two games than I think anyone imagined.
Thats good.
But I think we are all feeling snake bit and are just watching to see which direction we go in from here.

We need a win streak at some point damn it so why not now

Those are honestly irrelevant. They are trends but not predictors.

It is less likely to make the playoffs than a team starting 2-0, but if you have two teams at 4-2 and one started 0-2 and the other starter 2-0, it doesn't really mean anything.

Saints lost to two potential playoff teams. They didn't lose to the Browns or Titans here.

What are the stats for teams that lose by a combined 4 points in their first two games for making the playoffs?

It's not likely we make the playoffs, but only 3 teams in the NFC are 2-0. The rest are 1-1 or worse. It's possible the saints could be back in the hunt quickly, but 0-2 from two winnable games blows

No. We just have bad luck. I don't know who or what we pissed off....but we pissed it off good.

Think about it for a minute.

Game 1. Very little time left on the clock, down by 1 and they go for a 2 point conversion and nail it. How many NFL teams would do that?? That's shite you see in college.

Game 2. We don't turn the ball over, we get 3 turnovers our way, we don't allow an offensive touchdown.....and we lose. I'm pretty sure that has never happened.

I'm telling you, we are cursed!!

I'm optimistic. We should have won both games, so it wasn't like we got our asses handed to us. Is see a legit run stopping defense developing. It's nice to see TFLs and forced turnovers for once in black and gold. Been a while. And that run defense is the key to getting sacks and forcing turnovers. Promising Start.
