Interesting read on Ryan's 3-4 Hybrid.

I poached this from SR (those figs are good for something). I don't know how accurate it is. It was written during the lockout before the draft. Interestingly enough, it list two of our current players as fitting perfectly into Ryan's 3-4/46 scheme, although one of them is in a different spot than you'd think.

Is it wrong that I'm excited for player cuts?

The Nose Tackle is playing your pure 0-technique and is in charge of the A-gaps, the DE's are in charge of the B and C gaps on the outside. In the passing game, their jobs are to control the line and draw double teams. The Ideal players for this scheme based on the roles in the 2011 draft:
Ryan Strongside DE - Marcell Dareus, played 3-4 DE at the University of Alabama
Ryan Nose Tackle - Stephen Paea, played 4-3 DT at Oregon State University
Ryan Weakside DE - Cameron Jordan, played 3-4 DE at the University of California

Much like the Lebeau scheme, the SS is in the box. Unlike the Lebeau scheme however the SS will drop back into deep coverage sometimes and will tend to blitz quite a bit as well. He will be in charge of cleaning up the strongside in the run game. The strongside OLB is in charge of the C-gap and the outside in the run game and is used in man coverage over 80% of the time on the TE. The other 20%, he will be either blitzing or playing a mid zone. The strongside ILB is in charge of the A and B gaps on the right side in the run game. In the passing game, he will be covering a mid zone and rarely blitzing. The WILB is in charge of the A and B gaps on his side and will be blitzing over 50% in the passing game. The other responsibility he will have is to play short to intermediate zones. The Weakside OLB will be blitzing over 75% regardless of the passing or running situation. When he isn't blitzing he will be playing a contain on the outside for the run game or will be playing a flat zone on the weak side. The scheme calls for a lot of overload blitzes to either side as opposed to the LeBeau scheme, which calls for balanced blitzes normally up the middle. The Ideal players for this scheme based on the roles in the 2011 draft:
Strongside OLB "Sam" - Justin Houston, played 4-3 DE and 3-4 OLB at the University of Georgia
Strongside ILB "Ted" - Martez Wilson, played 4-3 MLB at the University of Illinois
Weakside ILB "Mike" - Quan Sturdivant, played 4-3 MLB at the University of North Carolina
Weakside OLB "Will" - Von Miller, played 4-3 OLB at Texas A&M University
Strong Safety - Rahim Moore, played FS at the University of California-Los Angeles

I agree I'm so excited for player cuts, free agency, and the draft

Same here. It will be a busy offseason getting under the cap and making the right moves.

But he's fat so we must ridicule him.

Exactly. And he's an a-hole. Now I've never met the guy or spoken to the guy. The players love playing for him and he's obviously well respected in the league, but he's suuuuuuch an a-hole!!!

I'd love it if you guys could respond to the legitimate criticism of Ryan that's been posted on here with such enthusiasm.
Like how his defenses statistically have generally been unimpressive...being generous.

Until he drops the weight #cuttingforryan

Looks like he has some personality to him
He should fit well in New Orleans
I think we're going to see the fanbase get behind him, despite the reaction from the drooling masses on this forum.

Powerman, jesus.
Quit whining about this board.
No one's making you post or read it.

Honestly, my only response is I'm curious to see how he'll do in a stable organization where the head coach is the leader in the locker room.
Raiders - complete mess
Browns - mess for years
Cowboys - Jerry Jones runs the show
And if I remember right, the cowboys D was off to a fast start before being decimated by injury.
So I'm just going to wait (weight - lulz) and see how it all shakes out.

But has he ever dealt with a defense with such a paucity of talent?

seems like harper will be a good fit for his defense.

What I want to see is are we truly devoid of talent or have the players been used in the wrong way.
Though Gregg Williams ran a 4-3, it was very attacking and aggressive. Problem was once the turnovers stopped, the D wasn't very impressive. Switching to the 3-4 will allow some of our fast, young guys to rush from a standing position.
I also want to hear what Payton has to say about this hire.

I have hope.
But damn, we've gone through A LOT of DC's over the recent years.
I have to hope that the 3-4 will jumpstart this defense.
If we fire this guy after 3 underperforming seasons, then we'll have really wasted that window.
But I hope that doesn't happen.

interesting read but it is on REX Ryan's defense. Anyone have a read on how similar or different their schemes or approaches are?
I think everyone should be excited for some major changes this year. I don't think it is just soundbites that Payton said he is coming in like it's his first year. Brees also specifically said he views this as a "fresh start" season.
When you have had not just a poor D but one of the worst in history whaddya have to lose? Fresh meat, new formula, the result can't be worse on D fo sho. Most of us prolly think that if we had a D that was just average or better this team would be looking at 12 wins without blinking.

Same here. Payton has to get it right at some point.

I can't for free agency and the draft to see how our personnel comes along. I'm holding off judgment of Ryan until the season. I was ecstatic about Spags and look how that turned out.

Williams ran a 4-3 in theory but his defense was built around the buddy ryan 46 as well and he had them down in 3 front sets a lot.

They pretty much run the same thing. They might have some specific wrinkles, but they're both running the same general take on their dad's old defense.
