Interesting Article on Roman Harper Style Blitzing

Harper rushed the passer 40 more times than any other DB in the league last year. This really shows the fatal flaw in Gregg William's system and how having a pass rusher is a needed part of a defense.

And also shows just how bad Harper was in coverage.

He's not great in coverage, but it has nothing to do with his coverage, its purely rush based stats.

The linemen were asked to occupy blockers for the blitzers, like Harper. That's why we got those big bodies in the middle in Franklin and Rogers. But we played a lot of off coverage instead of press coverage, and teams were able to avoid the blitz pretty easily.
The fatal flaw of the GW system was it's insanity; repeating the same things over and over again and expecting different results.

I know that, he was basically running a 34 defense with a 40 front, and assuming 6 or 5 guys were enough in coverage, but blitzing a safety 40 more times than any other DB in the league is insanity.

It has everthing to do with coverage. If he played in a normal scheme imagine how many more times he would have been exposed in the passing game.

God, if GW didn't help us get a SB...how poorly would he be rated among Saints' DC's?

The article has nothing to do with coverage.

Obvious indicator of the bounty system.
Just waiting for the idiotic liberal "sportswriters" to jump on that one.
Next thing you know, "blitzing" will become illegal. Which has me thinking, when a QB is sacked from the blind side, is he a defenseless player? The NFL really needs to start pumping the brakes on this shite.

A couple of factors for this:
* Gregg Williams aggressive schemes
* Roman Harper isn't that good in coverage so you need to use him somehow
* Our lack of anyone who can create their own pash rush
The last one is the part that still worries me. Spags may throw in some wrinkles, but I don't see where we brought in a pass rusher through FA or the Draft. Coaches are one thing, but you still need players with certain skill sets.

Gregg Williams also used his defensive line to eat up blocks. It'll be interesting to see if Ellis can thrive as an internal pass rusher again.

I heard that Goodell was gonna suspend Harper too but after reviewing game tape he decided that it was more of a penalty for the team to keep him on the roster than to suspend him.

It's funny to think had he just played prevent against the 49ers (obvious decision since Smith is no better than an average QB) we probably would have still won the Super Bowl last season.

This just points out what we already knew...Williams liked to blitz but never got the production he wanted from the DL so he used the DB's and any QB who is sorta smart realized that in mid-week meetings and exploited it on sundays.
