That will be a helluva one-two punch next season.

Not sure but hopefully we're done with Spiller.

Not sure if Hightower will be here, but he does bust it up in between the tackles well.

He can be our 3RB. Cut spiller and Browner. Extend Drew 3 years. Draft OG, OLB, DE, and WR. Pick up a good corner in free agency. Suddenly things look better.
And Payton isn't going anywhere. The media will always look to stir the pot for clicks

Hightower is really a 26/27 year old back with him bring out of football for 3 years.

Which reaffirms we are dumb for inking Ingram and Spiller to nearly $10 mil combined

Guys like Khiry and Hightower come off the street and do the job for less than $1 mil per year. Shifty, pass catching backs like Dion Lewis and Mike Gillislee are easily found and make peanuts.

Deangelo Williams
Charcandrick West
latavius Murray
Rawls
Langford

etc.. get some rookie or udfa in here on cheap deals. whatever. dont pay for RBs

When did four million a year become too much for a good starting RB

For this team? Sure there is

You have two of the top 12 highest paid RBs on a team in "cap hell". One doesn't even play. Glaring holes all over the field, a $20 mil QB, spending $$$ on an oft injured position with a short shelf life

On a position that we have proven you don't need a "stud" at RB - Ivory, Pierre, Joique, Khiry and to a lesser extent Lynell Hamilton and Cadet.

Having a high paid RB is a luxury, not a necessity. It's one we shouldn't be indulging in given our financial state. How many successful no name RBs to we have to watch in this offense before realizing that? Saints were at their best discovering these guys and guys at other position late in and after the draft

This isn't an indictment on Ingram, at all. He could run for 1k for 5 years in a row and I would still say we don't need him and his contract. For spiller, I can't even blame him.

How did Ingram do in y'all's pass game this year? I think I read that he didn't drop any passes(?), but he doesn't look AS smooth as some of the others over the past few years doing it.

I ask because in the past its seemed like defenses can key on certain plays because of the personnel on the field. IMO, it would help the offense out if Ingram could master the that part of y'all's offense.

He took a huge leap forward this year, he isn't as smooth as a pure catching guy like Sproles or as nimble as PT, but dude moves the chains and is clutch with catching passes when Brees needs an outlet. The most underrated part is his pass protection, been extremely solid this year.

Don't let some on here fool you, he played well before he was shelved on IR. Top 4 RB in total yards only to Martin, Freeman, and Peterson at the time.

At 4mil a year, I would pay him that over Vereen, Spiller, Mathews, Murray, etc contract from last year.

People want to argue and say things like well D.Will is cheap. D.Will isn't close to what Le'Veon Bell is for Pittsburgh. Then Latavius Murray, he gets more touches than Ingram yet is 0.4 YPC less than Ingram does. Rushing #'s are one story, understanding your job in a heavy passing offense like the Saints is asking you to do more than Oakland's.

He has looked good. He had more than a few noticeably good blocks in pass blocking, and excelled in the short passing game. He often took short dump offs for good yardage. Had a few giant plays out of the backfield, too.

He really evolved this year to become a complete back. The personnel thing is a nonissue with him, now. Between his evolution and the departure of Jimmy Graham, we definitely were able to remove some of the predictability of our offense this year. I personally believe this is why we were still able to be a top 5 offense with minimal weapons. Payton is actually a really good playcaller and was able to at least keep opposing defenses on their toes by using pretty much any and all personnel packages for any play call (we couldn't do this before - Jimmy can't block and Sproles can't carry between the tackles)

And I wouldn't pay any of them

what's the common denominator? Bad teams paying out big money to mediocre RBs, who also happen to be paying out huge QB contracts. Those are BAD rosters, personnel wise, and the teams all stink.

Seattle can pay a Lynch while Wilson was on a rookie deal. Vikes can pay AD w Teddy's contract. Foster, McCoy etc. Those teams aren't paying Drew Brees money to QBs

Lol you're proving the point - he Isn't Bell, not close, and yet the steelers are 5-2 since he took over, he's running at 4.6 a pop w 11 TDs while doing work through the air as well. They haven't missed a beat. It's a system very similar to what we have - leveon bell isn't leveon bell in Cleveland. Williams has been nonexistent for years and now pit doesn't miss a beat with him in the lineup. If he was hurt, Jordan Todman would be tearing it up.

If the steelers want to retain bell, watch how they fall with him, Ben and brown tying up all their money. Bryant will be up soon, too. Unless they knock out their drafts with cheap talent (like we cannot do) they will be screwed

Wasn't even comparing their talent. Either way, again, totally different systems

I was pointing out that the guy was a 6th round pick making 500k a year and is enjoying success. The way the Saints used to do it. The way New England still does it. Recycle RBs, you don't pay them, especially when saddling a contract like Brees and 10 other terrible ones

BTW, D.Will is getting paid 2mil a year which is half of Ingram. Bradshaw was signed a 4yr/18mil in 2011 and Jacobs was signed to a 4yr/25mil as well while Eli was on a 16.25mil contract when they won. Still more than that rookie/UDFA money you keep mentioning.

How about the bigger problem? The 4mil for a Spiller that is producing less than a 500k Cadet, the 5mil Browner that makes cutting White look like a horrid move, giving a huge contract to countless other players who have under produced.

You want to say signing Ingram to a 4mil/yr contract was a bad idea, I beg to differ. Consistency in the backfield helps offenses and for our consistency we got it for 4mil/yr.

Lets not act as if EVERY UDFA or off the street RB is going to be a gamechanger either. Robinson looked mediocre this year and before Hightower played against a bad jacksonville team, his two starts resulted in 41 carries, 139 yards, 3.39 YPC, 1 TD and 41 yards receiving. Take out two of Ingram's best rushing games and he still puts up 147 carries, 549 yards, 3.73 YPC, 5 TDs, and 379 yards receiving.
