It is crazy that an 11-5 team would not make the playoffs. Even crazier that it would be the 3rd place team from the NFC West where 3 years ago a 7-9 team won the division!

Which is exactly why we should have taken care of business much earlier this year. You win any one of the Rams, Patriots, or Jets game and right now we could still be alive for the one seed.

That is what blows my mind even more than an 11-5 team not making the playoffs.

True, but if you look at it, we were damn luck to win in Tampa. And the Atlanta game in the Dome came down to the last play.

Truth is, the Rams are made to beat a team like the Saints. Great defense and good running game. Same thing Seattle has except with a much better QB.

We should have beat the Jets, that is still a head scratcher.

Winning 11 games in the NFL today is quite an accomplishment. Sucks that an 11 win team could be left out of the playoffs.

Wait, if both the Cards and Saints win we'd still get the nod over Arizona, we won a direct contest with them. We'd have to lose and they'd have to win, it's the only scenario that would exclude us.

If we win, and they win, they would take the 6th seed and we would take the 5th seed, excluding the 49ers (because they lose the tiebreak to us and Arizona).disregard, I suck.

TO BREAK A TIE FOR THE WILD-CARD TEAM
If it is necessary to break ties to determine the two Wild-Card clubs from each conference, the following steps will be taken.

If the tied clubs are from different divisions, apply the following steps.
Two Clubs
1.Head-to-head, if applicable.
2.Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
3.Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
4.Strength of victory.
5.Strength of schedule.
6.Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
7.Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
8.Best net points in conference games.
9.Best net points in all games.
10.Best net touchdowns in all games.
11.Coin toss.

Oh I see. I thought they would win the tiebreak over the 49ers though.

not sure... but zona can't get in without a saints loss.

zona has worse conference record.

Ah well, I did the playoff simulator and Arizona winning would not get them into the playoffs alone. Must be some common opponent thing that pushes the 49ers above Arizona. Who knows.

Optimal scenario would be Carolina losing to Atlanta (not likely) and us winning against Tampa Bay. That would put Carolina in the 5 seed. I personally think Carolina in the 5th seed would be best for us because they have the potential to knock off some of the hardest home-field teams in the NFC - Chicago and Seattle. Watch all of the criteria for this fall into place and we lose against Tampa at home.

if saints won and zona won... its not about head to heads, its a 3 way tie. Goes to conference records of all three teams.

Yeah, seeing that now. They dropped one to the Rams, where the 9ers swept them this year. Ah well.

Saints needs to win and win big. If somehow we make the playoffs going in with a loss, we will be one and done. It's not a good look going into the playoffs with a three game loosing streak, especially to Tampon Bay.

I'm pretty sure that the head to head would apply to us. We beat both the 49ers and Cardinals so we have tiebreakers over both even in a 3 way tie. You only skip past it in situation like the panthers will have if they end up in a 3 way toe with 49ers and Seahawks because they lost to one and beat the other.

I do read. Do you? I understood from the very beginning what the point of this thread was: that the Cardinals might be 11-5 and not make the playoffs but apparently you couldn't be bothered to understand what I was saying. We win the head to head tie breaker in the 3 way tie with Arizona and San Fran. That is the first tie breaker, divisional record is irrelevant for us. For your reference here is the 3 or more tie rules:
quote:

Three or more teams
(Note: If two teams remain tied after the third step or other teams are eliminated during any step, tiebreaker reverts to step 1 of the two-team format.)
1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games among the teams).
2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
5. Strength of victory.
6. Strength of schedule.
7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
9. Best net points in common games.
10. Best net points in all games.
11. Best net touchdowns in all games.

Regardless of what tie breaker we use the result is the same, if the saints win they are in. If they don't they might not be.

This is what everyone needs to know.

If they do not win, they do not deserve to be in the playoffs, but I would take it anyway.

a team that has the same record as us but might be playing a lot better right now.

Has anyone ever lost 4 of their last 5 and still made the playoffs?

This isnt the BCS though. Every game counts. unless youre locked in of course.

I I know it is a different scenario, but it seemed to work out for us pretty well in 2009.

So Arizona? Even though we beat them?
