Extending a 37 year old QB would be a terrible fiscal decision.
Denver & NE disagree with that comment.

Why not build the team with as much talent as you can and get the "heir" next year when there's better prospects?
Wasn't Mariotta last year touted as a great prospect for this year? Bridgewater and Manziel the year prior to that? Every year we hear about the great QB coming out the next season, and when that happens he gets deemed as not very good. We really don't know if any of the guys you list will be good prospects until next offseason when they go through the process.
There's fallacy in thinking that postponing for life after Brees is the right move. QB is THE most important position on the roster, and not having one is the equivalent of a whore without a pimp. Bitch will get killed!
I'm not advocating trading up for or even taking Mariota at 13. I am saying that none of us know what will happen after this year with Brees. Maybe they extend him; maybe they trade him; maybe he gets hurt and can't play anymore; maybe he just starts to decline. The point is that the Saints know their plan, and there's a very good chance that plan includes prepping now to have Brees' replacement ready to step in whenever he no longer guides our whores. If they think Mariota is the guy (I think he could develop into a good qb) and the value is right, they will draft him. If they don't, then they will wait for the right value.

Teddy actually did pretty good fwiw
I see your point but there's no reason to trade a whole bunch of picks for uncertainty.
More than a few guys coming out next year played in a pro style system and it's a much deeper class.

quote:Come on now. He was behind one of the best OL in college football, and the WR at FSU are head and shoulders above most anything else in the ACC.
He took a step back yes but FSU WRs weren't as good as last year
quote:So did Jamarcus Russell, Christian Ponder, and EJ Manuel. Just reminding you that Coach Fisher does not have a stellar record with his QBs transitioning to the NFL.
He at least knows how to work in a pro style offense and make reads.
quote:Except for the whole alleged sexual assault thing. Except that.
but he did mostly kid stuff
quote:It only helps if you extend him this year. Brees would only count as 7.5MM in dead money if you cut him after this upcoming season, with a $19.75MM cap savings. Not saying that Saints will, or should, do this. A lot would depend on how much he is looking at for an extension, as compared to the $27.5MM he is currently looking at for 2016.
It would save cap space and the team has plenty next year to boot.
quote:I would rather not throw the heir to the wolves, but that is my POV. Also, I am not very impressed with the next QB class. I also do not know when the Saints will have a shot at a top pick again any time soon. I would rather that time not come after a 3-13 season.
Why not build the team with as much talent as you can and get the "heir" next year when there's better prospects?

I agree with you. The only way this type of trade happens is if they think he is the real deal. If they believe he WILL be the next Luck, then a trade up is worth it. If they think he COULD be, then you don't take that type of risk; you wait and see if he falls to 13 or even 10-11. If you think the chances are slim, leave him be

there can only be 1 team that wins, its looked pretty well considering they reached the superbowl at least.
how's the rookie method looking? Seattle is the only one that is even remotely close and they have a monster running game (which we don't have, but at least a decent one) and a monstrous defense (which we don't have).
Oh wait, we can't build the defense because you just traded the house for nothing.

Is your position because you feel that better players are available, or is it more of a distrust in MM?

Saints will send #13, #31 and a 4th (2016) for the #4 pick and a 6th rounder.

Then the saints will move to LA after a 0-16 season

Because we have other holes. Why waste three picks for a guy to sit the bench for maybe 2 years
And that's the point- we simply have to fill some of those holes with the draft; this is not the year to be worried about a QB.

Ok trade off all these picks give up on drew last two to three years.Thats Nuts.Mariota is two years from being ready to start. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

give up on drew last two to three years
quote:Maybe so, and that is kind of the whole point. MM will have two years to learn under one of the greats. Then he would be ready to take over under center.

Are you overlooking the fact that when you draft a QB that high, there is external pressure to play that QB now. plus, if you don't address those needs, the player won't have a chance to learn behind Brees bc he'll be thrown in the mix right away after Brees gets knocked all over the field.
I don't that will be the case here. If the Saint's go after Mariota, this season will be Brees' last season in New Orleans. They will let him sit behind Brees and learn for a year and try to trade Brees away next year. Reaslistically, we only have two more good seasons out of Brees. There will be teams who will be in the "win now mode" that will bite on the trade and are willing to rent Brees for a year or two. If they see their heir in Mariota, I wouldn't mind them making a move to grab him for the future. I wouldn't give up the house to do it though.

Please explain to me how drafting a highly touted QB makes zero sense when your current QB is 36 years old and is an Unrestricted Free Agent after the 2016 season?
First of all, the kind of move you're talking about is for a once in a generation type QB like Andrew Luck. Second of all this team needs rebuilding and using all those picks for a player that isn't a super safe pick would be insane.
