Hau'oli Kikaha 'doing outstanding' in ACL recovery

The New Orleans Saints are in desperate need of help rushing the passer, and even though one of their top options likely won't play this season, the team is optimistic he'll be able to contribute in the future.
Coach Sean Payton said Wednesday Hau'oli Kikaha is "doing outstanding" as he recovers from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, an injury he's now suffered three times.
A second-round pick in 2015, Kikaha suffered the injury in June, and torn ACLs typically require a minimum of nine months to a year for full recovery. The Saints place Kikaha on the physically unable to perform list before training camp, but it's still unlikely -- though not impossible -- he returns this season.
"Listen, his energy and how he plays, I think there's no question when you miss a player like that," Payton said on a teleconference. "He came on his rookie year and we thought did a lot of good things. So, I don't know that you replace him right away and yet we look forward to him coming back in the lineup and being a part of what we're doing defensively."
The timing of Kikaha's injury made it difficult to replace him because it was after the draft and free agency. The Saints eventually signed defensive ends Darryl Tapp and Paul Kruger to help on the edge, but neither offers the upside of the second-year player from Washington.
As a rookie, Kikaha played in 15 games with 10 starts and had 52 tackles, four sacks, four forced fumbles and two passes defensed.

Is it 3x, or 2x with another surgery to fix issues with the initial surgery?
Edit: Kikaha said the second one was a relapse from choosing the wrong graft. So I think 3 is accurate
Anyways, this would be huge for the saints going forward if he can contribute in the future

Pretty sure it's his 3rd.

It might be ill advised to bank on "future help" from a 3x ACL surgery guy !

Let's hope it's more than that.
Great news, though.

Why'd you put "future help" in quotes?
I wouldn't bank on it. You go get a pass rusher in the first, but getting another pass rushing contributor in Kikaha back, aka depth, would be huge.

If he provides a legit pass rush coming off the bench, then that's a win for us. I'm not exactly counting on him to be a starter at DE. I'm assuming he will be better than Edebali at getting to the qb on a consistent basis.

Tried to find info on any NFL player that had 3 acl's and still played at a high level but came up empty.
As someone said earlier I don't expect anything from the guy it would just be lagniappe at this point.

Thomas Davis did it 3 years in a row. We're also getting better and better at repairing and rehabilitation

Damn, those rookie numbers are pretty sweet, especially for THIS defense. This is great news.

not quite, but headed towards Greg Romeus type hope for me. Romeus was still thinking NFL last year...

I wish the young man well but I'm not getting my hopes up on a player that has now had 3 ACL's.

don't bring him back this year...it's a wash Give him some time to heal. Bring him back ready for a run next year.

The more practice you have at something the better you should become.....that's the good news.

I could be wrong but we can't bring him back. He was put on season ending IR.

He's on the PUP. He can come back, but I don't think he will
