- Ginsberg asked Vitt about how former defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs was fired and how Payton hired Williams. Vitt said Payton's decision to fire Gibbs was the only time the two "really became at odds." Vitt said Payton wanted more pressure, while Gibbs wanted more coverage.
"Him and I didn't talk for a couple of days. ... If you're firing him, you need to fire me," Vitt said.
- Vitt said he thinks Parcells recommended Williams to Payton for Gibbs' replacement.
"And the first time we brought Gregg Williams, we said, 'Jesus Christ, this guy is nuts,'" Vitt said. "You know, I mean, talking about himself, talking about his accomplishments, talking about his money, talking about how he should - you know, the guy had a pretty bad track record in being a pretty good defensive coordinator.
"And really, he was in Jacksonville with Jack Del Rio at the time, you know, which was, you know, like sticking your nose in a fan. I mean, it's just miserable down there anyway."
- Ginsberg asked Vitt why Payton fired Williams.
"So we're in the draft that spring, and we're all told as coaches there's no cell phones in the draft room," Vitt said. "It's a - it's what we're all told. I mean, you don't - there's no phones down there. Well, Gregg would continually take his down there. He took it the first two years. And, you know, Sean is not a confrontational guy. But on this particular year in (2011), Gregg started texting our draft picks to the media about four or five minutes before we made the pick. Sean watched him do this from across the room. So he had the first two draft picks right. So Sean told me, and Sean was livid. And I didn't want to believe it. I really didn't want to believe it. So Sean says, well, watch this, I'll show you the next round. The next round, he goes up to Gregg, and he goes, hey, we're going to draft this offensive lineman out of Oklahoma and takes Gregg's cell phone and covers it over with a piece of paper or a hat or whatever so Gregg can't get to his cell phone - or excuse me.
"We're going to take this guy from Oklahoma. Gregg texts this guy from Oklahoma to Jeff Duncan, puts his phone down, and Sean comes over and covers his phone with a hat and changes the draft pick. Duncan reports about this kid from Oklahoma on the offense. So we had - at that point in time, Sean had had enough. And an exit strategy was in place to move on from - to move on from Gregg.

One last parting shot for that bird watcher when he decides to peak back into this thread.
quote:
The former commissioner found Goodell's actions historically disproportionate to past punishment of players for similar behavior, which had generally been reserved to fines, not suspensions. He also stated that it was very difficult to determine whether the pledges players made were genuine, or simply motivational ploys, particularly because Saints defenders never demonstrated a pattern of dirty play on the field.
''The relationship of the discipline for the off-field `talk' and actual on-field conduct must be carefully calibrated and reasonably apportioned. This is a standard grounded in common sense and fairness,'' Tagliabue wrote in his 22-page opinion. ''If one were to punish certain off-field talk in locker rooms, meeting rooms, hotel rooms or elsewhere without applying a rigorous standard that separated real threats or `bounties' from rhetoric and exaggeration, it would open a field of inquiry that would lead nowhere.''

Protip for the Falcons: next time you actually sweep the Saints, try not to shite the bed the rest of the season and have it mean nothing at all.

I agree that the punishment was harsh. I agree that the Saints were made a scapegoat.
What I'm hearing from most of you is that you didn't have a pay for performance system in place though, and that's not true.
Did players intentionally hurt players? Doesn't appear so but that doesn't mean there wasn't a pay for performance/bounty system in place. Guess we'll never meet eye to eye on this point. Blah.
Football season is near. New coach, new scheme, possible some fricking DE's for the 1st time in 15 years. Let's get it on!

Dang man this is what I have been trying to say. Pay for performance and the way Gregg went about it as well as the FO was wrong. We got punished. It was Roger SAYING that the Saints were paying to hurt players that pissed us off the most. Thats what I said earlier. Nothing about being innocent at all. Roger got the whole nation intentionally thinking we were a dirty team and thats just a gotdamn lie.

Then we agree 100%. Just not sure others do.
I love you all the same! Is it football season yet?! I'm riding high on this 2-0 against y'all last season. It hasn't happened in a while but SHHHH!

So in one post you say:

So please explain how we had a competitive advantage compared to pumping in crowd noise that impeded the opposing offenses from hearing?

for competitive advantage when the opposing team has the ball on O?

The system was in place. Now nothing dirty ever really happened BUT that doesn't change the fact that the system was in place.

Explanation: In my statement about the Falcons, I was being sarcastic.
Falcons cheated, I don't disagree with that or the punishment. I accept it and don't make excuses.

Pay for performance did exist, pay for injuries did not.
There should be no asterisk bc the Saints had to actually go out and make these plays. They were one of the least penalized teams that season, which tells me they did so within the rules.
