"Experts" complaining about Byrd signing

My favorite thing about the Byrd signing is seeing so many "experts" butthurt and complaining about the signing purely because they don't understand how Loomis continues to pull this stuff off. The Grantland football guys especially seem butthurt because they don't understand how it happened.
How many years does Loomis have to do this before they stop whining about it? And they don't seem to understand that we understand that at some point the team will have to bite the cap bullet and rebuild. We are okay with that.

The thing that I had to grasp was that you can't rollover cap space so you might as well not leave any. Why be $50M under the cap?

Teams have been able to rollover space since the new CBA in 2011.

Rollover? As in, we have 5 mil in cap space this year, so we can add that to our cap space next year? I don't think I'm understanding that right.

Yep.

You are.
And yeah, the Grantland guys were pissy. Barnwell was talking up TB all last year and they fell way flat. I laughed on this podcast when he implied that they were almost as good as the Saints.

Yes, I'm pretty sure that is how it works, but you are also required to use a certain percentage of the cap. I don't remember what it was exactly, but I would guess somewhere in the neighborhood of 95%.

I dont think most of these "experts" were ready to talk about him unless he went to effing Denver or New England...they were all shocked when they found out he was visiting here first...and then boom....
Sorry Bill Polian...theres a reason why you arent a GM anymore.

Yes you can rollover any unused space from the previous year. Teams don't have to roll it all over though.
Edit:
I should read and type faster.

Didn't the Bucs have like 30 mil in cap space one year? Could they have created their own super cap for themselves if they chose to do so?

I'm sure they have to collectively rollover a certain amount to meet the 90% if they haven't done so.

I see. I just heard the minimum cap use percentage at a glance, and I assumed it was for individual teams. I had no idea it was a cumulative thing. That's interesting.

Yes, to all of this.
The thing I don't get about always making these same teams the main story of everything, the Saints routinely get some of the highest ratings for their games on national tv. They are as popular as anyone, yet are still treated like they are Jacksonville are something.

the signing was not expected, but we're all in.
same as NE and denver.
between the collective 3, they have about 3-6 year window left. All 3 teams signed players to contracts roughly length of their franchise QB to try and win it either now or in the last year or so. They're also assuming the cap goes up at least 9mil+ like this past year (esp with the tv deal in '15 there should be a hike and in '16)
these teams are loading up at their weaknesses to try and put up the most complete team they can.

I'll have to check it out again, but there is one for individual teams also but it's lower. And maybe the team one is 90% and the league is 95%. Or maybe it's 85%, 90%.
But yeah teams can roll it all over and I believe that's why teams like Cleveland and Oakland started with $60m.

Funny how this never gets talked about when these "experts" are talking about these teams having to pay up eventually. I think the smart teams have figured this out.

Also why I rarely watch espn or nfl network(though I watch that a lot more than espn).

pretty much. No one expected this much of a hike. I think people expected 125(?). No way we get byrd if that was the case. I think the big 3 QB teams realized if it went up that much this year, we have holes at x-y-z, next year the TV deal comes in it might be even HIGHER. so why not get the best FA we can now and next year get another one as well.
notice how ware's contract is 3yr/30mil (20mil guarantee first 2 years)? IIRC, the 3rd year is totally voidable. if he underperforms, in year 3 (in my opinion manning's last year), they could go all out and spend 10+mil on a pass rusher if needed

No sh!t? I just realized, it's like the NBA draft lottery. The teams that suck and have no idea how to take advantage of this gift are always the one's with it. Oakland has already been crapping away that money.

I stopped watching for everything except games after the Marcus Smart stuff, when they basically ruined that fan and excused Smart.

I actually like it that way
