Say Zach Martin falls to No. 27, and the top safeties and corners are off the board. Would you select him and have him compete at LG or RT? Maybe even C.

If he shows well enough at the guard spot, which many people seem to believe he can be an All-Pro guard, would you put him there and make Grubbs a June 1 cut? It would save the team a ton of money for the following years especially with Cam Jordan and Junior Galette needing to be paid, and we'll have to cut bait with one of our pricey guards eventually.

Grubbs's salary number jumps up to $9.1mil next year, then to $9.6 and $10.3 the following years. Way too much to be paying a guy who really struggled last year (I don't care about the Pro Bowl selection) and doesn't play a skill position.

Thoughts?

No. If we're drafting a G I'd rather Yankey.

Damn a sort of "should we" thread but it does not contain Jimmy Graham. This is quite refreshing.

I like your idea in theory but would have to look at the cap savings from cutting Grubbs. How much of the money would be dead money? Also, we sure have a lot of holes. I think it all depends on what we do in FA.

I wouldn't be able to get my pick in fast enough if I was the one making the selection.

I guess it would just depend on what WR is available or even what LB is available.

I wouldn't mind that pick though. Getting a player for the O-line, WRs, or LBs would be the way to go IMO.

He was the #10 overall guard according to PFF...I don't want to use our first round pick on a position we're already set at...if we draft an O-lineman with the first pick, I think it should be a guy who we think is our starter at RT.

...also, it makes a lot more sense to look to cut Grubbs for the following season.

...and this.

Interesting that several of you would prefer Yankey. All indications I've seen lead me to believe he's a fringe first round pick, early second rounder. Whereas Martin is almost a lock to be top 20 and that's at LT, his second best position.

I'm also in the line of thinking that the team should draft BPA at every spot. If Martin is available, and the team has a high grade on him, I don't think they're going to worry about it being an (seemingly) overlapping position because things can change in a hurry.

You don't cut Grubbs this year even if the kid plays well, but I would definitely cut him next year.

I would say for the time being this year if he is that good then try him at C. And if he excels you may keep him at C and Grubbs at G next year also unless we find someone else in the middle.

The biggest problem with this hypothetical is that there are too many factors to just say yeah do it. We currently have no starting C but maybe Lelito can be? Maybe not.

So before we do anything we have to make sure C is covered and then decide if we have another guy after that to takes Grubbs' spot.

I agree with the idea of getting cheaper, but we have to make sure we have a replacement in hand first.

I'm all with it. That is, any player that might now come in at center or right tackle. Then as suggested, slide over to guard when it becomes feasible to clear some cap from Grubbs or Evans.

Someone like Swanson, Richburg, or Stork in the 2nd or even 3rd Rd might be able to facilitate such a slide over similarly. Don't really know, like Martin, but if they see it, it makes sense.

And 90% of the time you're 100% surprised!!!

That's been a Payton hallmark since he's been here. It hasn't worked out that well for him up to this point...not in the first 3 rounds anyway. It sure makes for a suspense filled afternoon on draft day.

The FO should trade their first 3 round picks and get twenty or thirty 5th, 6th and 7th round picks. That's where they seem to shine.
