We had 6 picks going into the draft. R1P12, R2P47, R3P78, R4P112, R5P152, and R7P237. And according to draft pick value chart, our picks had a total value of 1931.7.
After trades, we still had 5 picks in the draft. R1P12, R2P47, R2P61, R4P120, R7P237. According to the draft pick value chart, our picks had a total value of 1977.1.
We also lost a 5th rounder next year.

Sure we lost a 5th RD pick for next years draft, but who cares? It's not like we gave up a top 3 round pick. It's a 5RD pick. Not a big deal IMO.
And the first pick in the 5th RD is the highest valued pick at 43pts. Our total value would still be higher after the trades. Not by much, but a few points. And that's if our pick is the #1 pick in the 5th.
Actually surprised at how accurate that draft value chart is

The Saints are big on trading up for their guy. It's a strategy that often doesn't work out, but they haven't shown any sign of changing.
I'd personally rather getting as many picks as possible as this whole thing is a crapshoot, but I've given up on expecting the Saints to do that.

They tried to move back at 12, so you gotta give them some credit. At some point you gotta take risks, finding a guy who will be a starter (bell) may be worth more than finding two guys who may be nothing more than off the bench

Even as a HUGE Jarran Reed fan, Trying to put together that 53 Man Roster really showed me a lot of things.
We needed the WR and S wayyyyy more than we needed another DT in the 2nd this year. Especially if Onyemata was always in the cards.
Did you really want to count on Jamarca Sanford or Erik Harris to backup at S? or purely Brandon Coleman or Kyle Prater to replace Colston? UDFA WRs against First Round Corners? Getting Bell or Thomas quality talents in the 3rd Round was not happening for us. We were lucky that Vonn fell into a range where we could offer 3+4 to grab him.
Vonn has that CENTERFIELD ball hawk style to his play that fits here....
Michael Thomas was the second WR on my list as for fit, behind only Laquon.
Fuller, Doctson, and Coleman are all fliers...not the role that we are replacing.
He is a perfect match on the opposite side from Cooks...
What more do we really want?
Also, the ONLY meeting that Landon Turner took was with the Saints. My boy was always coming here.
We KILLED this draft at positions of need, and on value.
We did not have the luxury yet of trying to add elite depth at a full position, over adding necessary depth at a weak position.
Maybe next year, or the year after we can start adding BPA no matter the position.
If we only resign one of Nick or John, we'll prioritize the position in FA in a deep class... or add another one in the draft... same at CB...
We'll get there. The ride is getting a whole lot less bumpy than it used to be...
