So who is really to blame here? Seems like most are placing the blame on Loomis. In my opinion, the problem is that the players that we are bringing in aren't working out and not necessarily a function of contract structures. The real problem is our inability to evaluate talent, be it via free agency or the draft.

If that is the case then isn't it the head coach who has final say? I'd place the blame much more so on coach instead of Loomis. I'm not here to exonerate Loomis for anything. It just seems like his role in the root cause of the problem is much smaller than the head coach's.

Am I way off base here?

Junior Galette $12,100,000 - Dude started thugging it (heck of a udfa find though amirite)
Keenan Lewis $6,350,000 - great signing, injury happened
Jahri Evans $5,100,000- awesome career, every great isn't worth their contract at a point, bit of injury bug
CJ Spiller $4,500,000- didn't work, smells like a payton toy
Brandon Browner $4,050,000- bad signing, blame them all
Marques Colston $2,700,000- see jahri, no blame again
David Hawthorne $2,260,000- was a decent enough signing, wasn't worth cap space but his time here wasn't too bad
Brodrick Bunkley $1,612,500- good signing at the time, was no longer worth his vet deal
Erik Lorig $500,000
Stanley Jean-Baptiste $482,448
TOTAL $40,405,183

I mean, for all the "bad personnel" moves, there really isn't many to sit here and bitch about.

It's definitely Loomis.

For what reason(s) do you think it is "definitely Loomis" instead of the head coach?

Blame to be placed all around really. The talent evaluator, the GM for the contract structuring and dollar amount, coaches for bad schemes that maybe the player doesn't fit in to, and then lastly the player due to some getting paid and then become complacent and stop putting forth the effort.

Shouldn't Jimmy Graham be on there?

Hard to argue with this. I just feel that if the talent evaluation was correct then we wouldn't be having this discussion. All other aspects become factor only because the talent evaluation was horrific.

Galette went apeshit.

Lewis caught a bad injury bug.

We actually have Evans cheaper overall than before we cut him, even with the dead money.

Who the frick knows on Spiller. That turned out to be a frick up.

Ditto for Browner.

Colston averages out to less than his per year even with the dead money so we came out ahead on that contract.

Ditto for Hawthorne though he was never that good so overpaid. Lost a little on this one.

Bunkley was good when healthy and not that much dead money.

Eveyone else is too little to complain about.

So the only two real frick ups were Spiller and Browner. If Galette hadn't gone mental no one would be discussing this.

We only horribly missed on two of these with talent evaluation (Spiller and Browner), one of which may be partially due to injury.

I say choosing to extend Galette was a big mistake. He was here for a year so we should have known what type of person he was.

From the responses so far, it seems like this whole situation is more attributable to bad luck than any kind of incompetence.

I can't really argue we have had plenty of bad luck. I had just been hearing a lot on this issue and Loomis being thrown under the bus, so I was just trying to better understand why.

Galette was the only other player on the list to question. So it sounds like our situation is more bad luck than anything else.

yep, saints did more of the honorable thing to cut galette despite the HUGE Cap ramifications. collectively its quite the unusual circumstance but the saints have quickly transitioned from a veteran roster to extremely youthful.

Pretty well broken down IMO, thanks...

Maybe everyone should put their pitchforks down... I can remember the board being excited as frick when we signed Browner, Lewis, and Spiller, now most people here are saying that our FO and CSP suck for bringing them in... Hindsight is always 20/20
