Saints running back C.J. Spiller recently said he’s ready to “flourish” in the New Orleans offense. He may have to get in line. Literally.

Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune noted Thursday on Twitter that it’s “[p]retty apparent” the running back rotation is Mark Ingram, Tim Hightower, and then Spiller.

That’s good news for Hightower, who was out of the NFL for three full seasons before joining the Saints last season, and bad news for Spiller, who is still struggling to recapture his form of 2012 (1,700 yards from scrimmage in Buffalo) and 2013 (1,100 yards from scrimmage in Buffalo). In 13 games last season, his first with the Saints, Spiller had 112 yards rushing and 239 yards receiving. His brightest moment came via an 80-yard catch and run for a touchdown in overtime against the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football.

After the 2015 season ended, Saints G.M. Mickey Loomis suggested that 2016 would be much different for Spiller: “I think we will see the real C.J. Spiller and we will be able to give him a lot of opportunities to get back to player that he was. We are looking for some good things from him. He’s a special player when he is right.”

Spiller had knee surgery during training camp last year, and coach Sean Payton has pointed to injuries for Spiller’s overall lack of production. The apparent placement of a presumably healthy Spiller at No. 3 behind Ingram and Hightower suggests either that Spiller still isn’t completely healthy — or that Spiller is healthy and, at least based on the offseason program, Spiller hasn’t done enough to convince the coaching staff to move him any higher on the pecking order.

Regardless of where he fits in the rotation, the Saints consistently have used two and three running backs over the past decade. Spiller has the skills to fulfill a Darren Sproles-type role for the Saints. If they can get out of Spiller what the Bills got out of him, the Saints will have an even better chance to get back to the postseason despite being in one of the more competitive divisions in the NFL.

Can we trade Spiller and Byrd for a free muffuletta for all of the Greater New Orleans area?

I'd expect hightower to get more carries.

I just want spiller to be a dynamic 3rd down back at this point

Does it matter? We already know he's going to be situational.

Definitely disappointing for a RB on a 4yr $16Mil deal but hope he contributes anyway possible this season

Sproles was #3 on our depth chart too. He was that as a runner, but the #1 receiver out of the backfield. So freaking out is pointless.

My expectations have completely dropped with him. After last season it just didn't look like his heart was in it at all.

Not sure depth chart matters when it comes to our RBs

How is any of that relevant. They could have him "third" in the offseason rotation because they don't want to overwork him since he had surgery a year ago. He could be third because he will be more of a 3rd down only back, and Ingram & Hightower need more time with the starters since they will probably be more of the workhorse.

Finally, how often is Florio right with his projections a month before TC starts?

Hightower has not been projected this high up on the depth chart. Hightower is the bargain player. I don't care where Spiller is at on the depth chart. Spiller is not worth what we paid. Let him be on someone else's depth chart.

You actually going to compare Sproles to Spiller. After a depth chart designation, they are not even close in production.

Why is this shocking? Spiller is a glorified WR pretty much. Just that we use him out of the backfield. I imagine he'll be our go to option on screens and 3rd down. We did this with Sproles and we did this with Bush.

Whether it's Ingram, Hightower, or Spiller, everyone will get their fair share of downs and touches. Ever since Payton's been here, we use all our RBs. This shouldn't be upsetting or shocking to anyone.

Hopefully we cut him after this season to get some cap room. Waste of money even if he turns out to be a decent situational guy. You don't pay a RB to maybe get lucky for 6-7 touches a game.

Spiller's position on the depth chart has no effect on his touches. He will still get 5-7 touches if he's 2nd or 3rd. Hightower is Ingrams backup not Spiller

This.

Spiller and Hightower aren't competing for the same touches. Now if Lasco passes him up, then yeah
