Ivory

quote:

Ivory was asked Wednesday if he thought the last two weeks would make coaches think twice about sending him back to the bench when Sproles returns.

"Yeah, they would," he said, according to The Associated Press. "But I think as long as I'm doing the right things and get a plus on the plays that I get, I think that just helps me out and allows them to give that much more trust in me."

Ivory has 17 rushes for 120 yards, an average of 7.1 yards per carry the last two games.

The Saints ground game doesn't consist of just Ivory and Sproles, however. Pierre Thomas has averaged almost 5 yards per carry and taken over some of Sproles' screen-game duty. Mark Ingram has also seen his yards per carry jump the last two weeks, from 2.9 to 4.8.

Ingram dismissed the idea that Ivory's play has inspired him to run harder.

"Seeing him run hard is great and he's a great runner, but just because he runs hard doesn't mean he makes me run harder. I mean, I run hard anyway," Ingram said."

The abundance of good running backs is a problem for the Saints when they're all healthy, as teams are reluctant to leave more than three backs on the active 45-man roster. It's a problem many NFL teams would like to have, but interim coach Joe Vitt now might have to decide to send his starter, his first-round pick or his home-run hitter to the bench with Sproles' return.

I really don't have an answer to this one.

Ivory is doing the best, so benching him seems silly.
Can't bench PT.

It'll probably be Sproles or MR.

I'd just ride with Ivory until he injures himself.

This is a rare situation in the NFL. If these guys continue to play well for the remainder of the year, someone is getting traded. This team needs help in too many other places to keep someone capable of valuable production on the bench. As said earlier, it's a very good problem to have.

Injuries have kept Ivory at bay and if he remains healthy with any kind of input he will be traded.

I would rather they trade Ingram and keep "The Kraken"

Play all of them. Cadet has been active and getting a few reps. I think that having 4 backs of their caliber really allows creativity in our sets and keeps them all from getting banged up.

I do. Cadet and PT have been splitting Sproles' role in the offense over the last couple weeks. When Sproles comes back, Cadet gets relegated to purely special teams work if he's active. PT continues in his normal role, and Ivory and Ingram split the carries in a similar manner that they've been doing.

This is such a weird problem for us to have considering our backs haven't stayed healthy on a consistent basis except for 2006 and 2009 and most of 2011. However I stand by the fact that this won't be such a good problem to have when some of the guys want to be the main runner. I know we probably won't have just one RB for the foreseeable future, but having 5 is just out of control.
Honestly the best system to me would be to have 3. Two pounders like an Ivory or Ingram and one shifty "3rd down" guy. But then again, how do you bench Thomas when he's been so reliable for so long?
Obviously you'd like to keep everyone, and if they all stay happy, great. But you saw how the Reggie Bush situation turned out.

I dont think he has a shot. They'll deactivate him and put Sproles back in the lineup. I think he just doesnt have enough value, even on special teams, to take up a spot.

Also, Ingram needs to shut his fat mouth.

Ingram must be watchin old highlights against Miss St and Tenn if he sees himself running hard. Just like Bush, I didn't like him in college but when he became a Saint I supported him, but I have NEVER been impressed with.his NFL play. Maybe we can trade Cleveland for someone and he can go play with Trent again and the " experts " can argue over who is better again

To me, the best solution is to get two on the field at the same time. For example, almost always have either PT or Sproles on the field as a WR. Then bring in Ivory or Ingram as the HB. The playcalling possibilities are endless with screens, end arounds, or straight up runs

I think we all agree it SHOULD be Ingram. Will it? I don't know. Ivory is making it a point to play him more and has looked vicious on the field. No way we bench sproles and PT is just good in every facet for us.

I don't agree "it should be Ingram." He has been running with just as much authority as Ivory has the last few games. My biggest problem is that I like them all. I don't see everyone staying happy with comments like this coming out, but I guess I'm just pessimistic. If Sproles and Thomas were just a bit older, it would be nice for it to be sort of passing the torch down to Ingram, Ivory, and Cadet, but I see them playing for 3-5 more years.

The problem is Ivory is a better NFL runner than Ingram... but has a higher chance of getting injured unfortunately. PT is just so reliable, and the screen game (whenever they actually call it) is gorgeous. And then obviously Sprolesy is just in a different class all together in terms of what he brings.

With what Ivory has done this year, I just don't see how you can bench him. If one has to be benched out of PT, Ivory, Sproles, and Ingram....I say it's Ingram, but I don't see why we couldn't have 4 active RB, especially since Sproles does KR, and PR.

The Ingram/Ivory 1-2 worked out really well, I'd hate to lose that capability.
