I never said Smith wasn't big enough. I said he's not strong enough to draw double teams consistently, which a 3-4 DE needs to do.

the role of your nose tackle is to draw double teams.

not really the job of the 3-4 end

rob ryan's 3-4 isnt really a conventional one anyway. He'd play some 5 technique, some 3 technique, maybe even some olb

He still has to be able to draw some teams or the linebackers will be swallowed up by the guards/tackles. And I know Ryan runs a 1 gap that requires the linemen to be disruptive, which doesn't sound like Smith's bag either.

he just needs to hold up at the point of attack and help free the linebackers.

and i think on passing situations he can get after the QB. keep in mind the blitzing options from the outside are increased in the 3-4. He goes from being the guy in the 4-3 that they must key on on 3rd down, to the 3rd/4th option they must block in the 3-4. That takes some pressure off of him.

I think he did that in DAL because he never had a true NT. He had jay ratliff and that is what he was best at.

back in CLE he had Shaun Rogers at NT, and ran a more traditional front

Tell that to the OT's who escort him out of the play on the regular

I think that has more to do with how wide he gets on his pass rush than anything. He goes wide anticipating a pass play, then the running back goes right past him. This doesn't really have anything to do with o-linemen handling him in my opinion. He takes himself out of the play by going as wide as he does.

Oh, but he's so strong!

Why is that funny? Is strength not one of the main factors of playing that position?

I really don't understand your argument about his size. The guy is probably bigger than Cam Jordan.

How do you know this? Cam Jordan wasn't commanding double teams either. That wasn't their job before. Smith seemed to hold up pretty well playing some 3-4 end for Gregg Williams. Funny how you all keep ignoring this fact.

Which isn't bad for a 3-4 DE. But, he has been listed at that weight since his rookie year. Or you suggesting the guy hasn't gained weight since his rookie year? He looks to have clearly gained weight in my opinion.

smith's job before was rushing the passer as a 4-3DE, right? If he couldn't beat someone 1v1 as a rusher and was pushed back often during run plays last year, how are you going to prove to me he can handle double teams in a 3-4?

He played 3-4end in GW's scheme occasionally, not majority of the time, and he hasn't done it even that well since the 09 season! I've watched him get beat the last couple of years and doesn't demand a double team because most tackles can handle him 1v1 with ease. Hell when he was shifted to 4-3 DT on some plays he still got beat.

It's about to be 4 years later, he's getting old and costs too much to be effective. he's taking away reps from younger blood that could be more impressive. Not worth it, veteran leadership did us jack shite last year.

Who, on our roster, can even play 3-4 DE?

I am all for getting better players if we can, but as of right now, we are in a bind. Both financially, and talent-wise

We are in a bind because of him you gump. Getting rid of he and others and moving some shite around will allow us to find his replacement and then some. While our QB salary is not moving, this dudes sure can. As well as others.
