Hawthorne - Cap Hit $4,510,000 Dead Cap $2,260,000
Spiller, Morstead, Ingram, Vaccaro & Peat are the next 5

We don't have a lot of room to work with next year, but hopefully things work out on the field.

Top salaries for 2017. We need a qb & need to lock up Armstead. 2017 looks great for the Saints and should complete the rebuild. We should finally be a young team again.

Byrd - Cap Hit $11,700,000 Dead Cap $8,000,000
Jordan - Cap Hit $10,300,000 Dead Cap $9,600,000

Browner - Cap Hit $6,300,000 Dead Cap $1,300,000
Ellerbe - Cap Hit $5,900,000 Dead Cap $0
Strief - Cap Hit $5,100,000 Dead Cap $2,200,000
Spiller - Cap Hit $4,850,000 Dead Cap $2,500,000
Ingram - Cap Hit $4,500,000 Dead Cap $1,800,000
Morstead - Cap Hit $4,000,000 Dead Cap $250,000
Peat - Cap Hit $3,107,317 Dead Cap $6,732,521

Combine this with 2 more drafts, 2 more UDFA classes, and 2 more FA periods.

We're gonna extend Brees, which will stretch his cap hit.

Fine by me...assuming he is healthy and ready to go. He will be one of the only old guys on the team.

Which players have roster bonuses next year that can be converted

I believe Jordan has a roster bonus that will be converted into a signing bonus next year and will save $4.8 Million.

Brees' base salary will likely be restructured.

Evans may be gone at this rate. Ellerbe won't be making that money next year, and if he works out will likely sign an extension that will lower his hit.

Probably will extend Unger and reduce his hit as well.

Colston is gone most likely and the frees up $3.2 Million.

Morestead can be a $3+ million in savings if the Saints feel they can get an adequate replacement in the draft.

There is room to save money, but it won't be like the Saints have a ton.

I'm not really sure. I just started learning about Cap hits & dead money. Other guys on this site know more about that stuff than I do.

I know the horse is out of the barn but why do they make cap numbers so difficult? I think the tax code may be simpler. frick.

I was speaking more along the lines of roster bonuses & signing bonuses. I've never taken the time to look anything up.

NBA's cap is a bit more straight forward.

NFL's has so much

Do you think they'll cut him in 2016 with 7.1 mil in dead money or do you think they'll wait until 2017?

We usually extend them prior to cutting them...

And I was being serious about the complexity of the NFL cap. It just over complicated for little reason.

He's a top half, first round pick. His cap hit is going to be relatively high. Vacarro was drafted in nearly the same position in the same round, so that's about right.

Assuming Byrd is healthy & playing...2017 isn't that bad.

Jordan is the only substantial one but Browner and Strief can both save a little.

As said Jordan would save $4.8m, Strief $1.6m, and Browner $1.125m if their bonuses are converted.

That's enough to get us under the cap assuming it's around $150m. We're sitting at about $154m right now.

Byrd and Brees are the only big money guys we can restructure. Others will save money too (but are all under $5m base), but Brees and Byrd give you the most bang.

Currently we have 41 players under contract next year so we'll have to do something with Brees unless we touch about everyone else.

Wtf were they thinking on Evans restructure? God that's horrible. We're stuck with him until next year.

You mean until 2017. I mean technically we can do a June 1st cut on him next year to save a little more but I doubt we go that route unless his legs fall off.
