Brees tag was obvious, given shared agent with Nicks

Can't find the link, but profootballtalk reported a few days ago that both Brees and Nicks were represented by CAA. The article was about the obvious conflict of interest, since both guys are trying to get the most out of the same financial pie in NOLA.
The clear implication was that there was no way Brees was going to sign before the tag deadline, since the Saints move was obvious - sign Brees, tag Nicks.
By holding Brees out, his agent guaranteed the tag would be used on him. More important, it guaranteed it would NOT be used on Nicks. So now both men will get big, non-tagged contracts - Brees from the Saints, Nicks from someone else.
It was the only way that CAA could rep both guys without a massive conflict of interest. And of course, it maxes out the commission for CAA. Doing it any other way would have exposed CAA to possibly lose Nicks as a client, and put less money in their pocket.
Given today's events, it looks like PFT had it pegged. I'm surpised that a bigger deal hasn't been made of this.

CAA is going to make bank this off season.

i dont see why people are saying bye to Nicks. Saints still have time to work out a new deal with him (7yrs/$60M) or Colston

Well thats fine for CAA but if Brees went along with that he's is an idiot. if he didn't and CAA just manipulated the situation it's risky. If Nicks departs and Brees were to get hurt next year CAA will have lost him as a client.

They will be offered more than the saints can pay, given our cap issues.

ok so why is it a conflict of interest?

The agent's job is to get their player the best possible deal, without thinking of anyone else. Brees' agent is required to get him every penny, even if it means losing Nicks, unless Brees tells him otherwise. Same with Nicks.
Repping Brees and Nicks together means that can't be done in the vacuum it should be. Assume Brees would sign for $18 mil. His agent won't do that, because he knows that signing too means Nicks will get tagged, and kill his multi year deal. Conversely, if Nicks and the Saints are willing to sign him for $15 mil a year, Nicks's agent won't do that because then Brees maybe won't fit under the cap.
There's basically one pot of money, and one agent dividing it for Brees and Nicks. The only way the agent could be sure both guys got the most $$$, and/or not be fired by his player, was to make sure Nicks didn't get tagged. Only way to do that is to hold out Brees.

I thought Brees was tagged?

For now. There is no chance the Saints fail to give him a long-term deal. He's also at a position not as injury prone as OG. Last thing Nicks' agent wants is for him to be tagged, then blow an ACL. His market value for a multi year deal in 2013 plummets.
And again, since Brees and Nicks have the same agency, they were able to use Brees' delay til the tag deadline as a way to be sure Nicks hits the open market now. That's why there was never any chance Brees would agree to a long term deal before the tag deadline. A quick Brees deal meant almost no chance of Nicks getting a long term deal this year. So their common agents appear to have made sure that didn't happen.

Saints = Aints. They've never paid their stars what they deserved. Why spend money to win when the fans will come to see losers?
