His value would be higher because he would be able to compete on the open market

Then, it just takes 1 team willing to pay him an absurd amount to drive it up

There's about a month between the Super Bowl and the start of Free Agency. Complete speculation on my part, but I believe both sides are probably in the same ball park as far a what they both want, and can get a deal done within that time frame. I would be surprised if a contract isn't done when FA hits next season.

And I agree to an extent, but by that point, Brees has already taken on the risk of playing out the last year of his contract.

That changes a lot

But Hoodoo Man told me we had basically a whole year to get this thing done

Agreed. I was more surprised from his standpoint that an extension didn't get done this offseason (up to this point). A 37 year old quarterback playing out his last year can be pretty risky.

would Brees accept the proposal if the Saints were still associated with her? He clearly is on Tom's side.

Tommy Boy still has 100% of the voting shares. Those don't get taken away from him until the day he dies, and they don't go to Rita in any case.

The bottomline is he doesn't want to go anywhere and as long as he's still playing at a high level
Actually, Drew will go to whoever pays him the most. Drew is like 99% of the players out there; he doesn't give a shite who he plays for, he only cares about who's gonna pay 'em what he wants.

I actually know. The sticking point is guaranteed money and length of contract, and they are not very close in regards to the numbers.

I would be shocked if he signs at all. What Drew really wants is to test the FA market and he's willing to play out his contract to do it. The Saints have tried like hell to get him locked in on an extension but Drew Money Brees would have nothing to do with it.

thats fine and I would want him to do that. He does not owe us anything, he played out a 6/60mil without bitching and moaning when we took a complete risk on him and he balled out into a top 3 QB. He has the leverage, especially now that a franchise tender costs 44mil, there's no reason for him to bend to the Saints FO will, not when they're fricking up draft picks and throwing out money to free agents willy nilly from 2012-2014

While I won't be as abrasive as you, I'll agree that Brees is looking for his last big paycheck before retiring in a few years. He has his ring, his hall of fame ticket punched, and like 12 kids. He'll play 2-3 years in Cleveland and then retire a Saint.

I don't understand this thinking...

What can he do to make himself anymore valuable?

Does the Benson mental instability issue play into this at all? Will the negotiations speed up once the family tiff gets cleaned up in court?

No, dipshit. That has absolutely nothing to do with it.

We cannot afford to pay brees 30 million dollars. Or extend his contract
He's done. He can go get that money somewhere else. But he's not getting 30 mil here.

I really think people are underestimating how huge this is.

It means teams can throw any offer they want at him and it only take one team going full retard and tossing out $35-40 to see him likely gone.

And using the tag isn't ideal because his agent will use that as the price point they should be aiming for, otherwise he'll ride it out another year.

I think the Transition Tag may be our only option aside from just letting him be a FA. It sets the price around $36 mil and gives us right of first refusal which offers some protection and means we have him for at least one more year unless a team overbids.

That price is more affordable than the Franchise Tag, which is about $43 mil. To get that we'd have to make a cut or two (though we are right around $40 mil under next year at the moment). $36 mil is doable but still not ideal.

Last time Drew's agent used the tag price as the sticking point and I have no doubt they are trying to get close to that again (at the very least in fully guaranteed money).

The gap was likely so wide it didn't make sense to keep talking, so it's not surprising that there have been no talks in two months.

You think he`s getting ready to retire soon? The last QB they drafted was Garrett Grayson as a 3rd rounder.

I'm not underestimating it, I just don't see him hitting FA. Even if he does, and listens to offers from other teams, you don't think that Brees gives the Saints a chance to match whatever he's offered? If that does happen, I can't imagine the Saints not matching.

The only way I see Brees leaving is if the team chooses to let him walk. As long as the Saints want him here, I don't see anyway in which he leaves in FA. The team has made some pretty surprising moves in the last couple of seasons (Graham, Sproles, etc.) but choosing to let Brees walk would be on a whole different scale.

$35-$40 a year? I'm with the "it only takes one team" mentality, but that's a pretty high figure. Being that we have tons of flexibility going forward starting next offseason, it would have to be something crazy like $40 for us not to match.

I'm not saying Brees wouldn't give the Saints a chance to match any offer.

But there very well could be a team flush with cap that could give him a 2 year, $70 mil deal. It isn't a long term commitment and give that team immediate playoff hopes if not championship aspirations.

Not saying it will happen but crazier things have.

Can't disagree with that. Hell, with another losing season, who knows what could happen from either side. Either, or both, sides could decide that they're ready to move on and start fresh.

Any chance that a portion of the voting shares could be tied into Bree's next contract? He is such a vocal member in the NFLPA- maybe a landmark clause could pave his way to team leadership.

I think this would be better than 1. paying him so much that we're forced to have another crummy defense, or 2. losing him to San Diego again.
