Brees contract thoughts...

Chime in here, and help me figure this thing out...
If we can manage to get Fleener, Cadet, Stupar, Laurinaitis, Sanford, Fairley, etc etc
ALL under contract without having to do a Brees restructure.....
Is this a masterful strong-arm negotiation play or proof that a handshake deal is done behind the scenes... to let Drew's cap number stand.
We can basically have him play under a 1 year deal. Then franchise him if he doesn't agree to team friendly terms. So he is then negotiating a deal at 39? Stupid to think his agents would let that happen.
I'm guessing his team wants a 4 year extension, with some hefty Flacco sized guarantees. We're probably holding fast at 2 years extended, getting him to 40 years old. Guarantees are fine for a guy that is our franchise.
Things are good enough between both sides, they aren't going to haggle too much. Right?
We obviously didn't NEED to restructure this offseason to make our moves. Had we needed to, Maybe they would have pulled the trigger on the handshake deal?
What is the benefit of doing the deal next year that I am missing? other than the one that San Diego thought they had, of having insurance against injury. Or are they really just strong arming his arse?

That would be incredibly in his favor. If we franchise him next offseason he will cost $43M. That is fully guaranteed, full cap hit.
The team has virtually no leverage. Their entire plan hinges on him being around for a 2017 or 2018 run. He is gonna rob the team for all he can get, and rightfully so.

Using a franchise tag on Brees in 2017 if he played out his contract would be too cost prohibitive. His franchise tag number will be $43.09 million, which is based on 144 percent of his 2016 cap number.

GOTCHA! so that's the hold up. He holds the leverage.
Thought it was the other way around, Average Top 5 or 120% of contract. Didn't think it was CAP...
WOW what a bargaining chip!
*edit... THANKS! wow.

Hasn't Drew been franchised twice already? Don't think franchising him is an option

He was only franchised once and he signed before the season started that year so it doesn't count as him ever being franchised.

I thought he had been franchised in San Diego. Guess not

Brees, who was given the exclusive rights tag this offseason (meaning that no other team could bid for his services under any circumstances), was appealing language in the new CBA that made it unclear as to whether this was the quarterback's first or second franchise tag in the eyes of the league. He was also franchised by the San Diego Chargers in 2005 after his rookie contract ran out. If the NFL had won the ruling, the San Diego tag would have had no meaning, and the Saints could have franchised Brees twice more after this year -- basically putting him on the hook for two straight lucrative but manageable one-year contracts through 2013. However, Burbank's ruling stated that Brees' New Orleans tag was the second of his career, and that both should count.

So I hate tom brady with a passion. But my GOD is he a team player compared to brees

Doesn't hurt that Brady's wife has a net worth over twice as much as his.
Posted on 3/17/16 at 9:53 pm to mm2316
I don't think that has anything to do with it. Brees is set for life and so are his great grandkids twice removed.

I'm not going to say it's THE factor, but Brees has a net worth of $55 million (according to celibritynetworth.com), while Tom and Gisele have a combined net worth of $480 million. That has to have SOMETHING to do with it.
Is Brees set for life currently? Yeah, probably. But the guy doesn't get paid to endorse Wrangler, Pepsi, Tide, Nyquil, Vick's, Advocare, etc. because he truly believes in all of those products.

While he is still getting paid very well he is getting paid under market value on a per year basis.
So he isn't a knight in shinning armor but he also isn't trying to assrape the pats for every penny.

Pretty sure that the reason we're in this $30mil cap hit hole is because of Brees restructuring, fwiw.

Can't use the 3/21 as a reason, he signed that during his notable decline in play and I don't think many people including him were expecting to continue playing elite til 40.
His new extension is 2/42 or 41 with 28/29mil signing bonus. He's getting paid a few mil under his worth but he's also signed his last contract with that extension
