This is pretty close to straight up value to me. Advantage that Cook has two years before a new deal and Johnson is franchised. If they could both teams could work out long term deals I could sign on for it.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Rams are in trade "discussions with several teams" about franchise player CB Trumaine Johnson.
Johnson signed his franchise tender on Monday, which will pay him $16.7 million in 2017. The Rams have been reluctant to sign Johnson to a long-term deal, suggesting they see him as a questionable fit under new DC Wade Phillips. One of the better cover corners in football, Johnson would obviously be a huge get for whoever lands him.

negotiating long term deal with TJ would be understood part of deal.

If we also get a pick. I would do Cooks and our 3rd for Johnson and their 2nd.

Why would they do this though. They already have a Brandin Cooks type player in Tavon Austin they can't get the ball to.

Tavon Austin is essentially the same exact player as Cooks. Why would they want two of the same player - both of which are too small to play a true number 1 X position in the NFL? Austin just signed a 4yr, 42mm extension.

They would definitely have the shortest WR corps with Tavon Austin and Cooks.

Same height and speed not everyone gets to have Drew Brees throw them the ball, or have Sean Payton call offense for you.

They use Tavon much more as a tool around line of scrimmage. Screens, end arounds, handoffs out of backfields. Yes he does get involved in routes down the field but Brandin Cooks would be a much more legit vertical threat whereas Tavon will get the underneath much more opened up.

We'd need to get a pick in return. A 2nd rounder honestly.

Would love to see him in our offense. Bring the bush end around and fake back

He isn't near as good of a receiver

yeah, Trumaine's contract longterm is the hinderance which hurts value, Cooks at least has 2-3 cheapish years left on deal before worry.

Meh.... I think a proven CB is much more valuable these days than a small WR who has had 2 good years in an offense that has made many look good onl to see them not perform when leaving NO and Bree's/Payton

cheap THIS year, $8mil+ next year, then $10-12mil+ longterm in 2019

Austin has some similarities but nowhere near as threatening. Rotoworld take after the last game of 2016-
Tavon was as frustrating as ever in 2016. He sprinkled in moments of brilliance but they were often buried between layers of gaffes and inexplicable miscues. Austin is undeniably talented and can change the game in a split-second with a long catch or one of his patented returns. But he still hasn’t graduated from being a gadget player and at this point, he probably never will.

And as pointed out, deal has to be predicated on longterm deals not the franchise tag cost.

Johnson's play fell off a bit in 2016. Can someone post his PFF ratings?

IMO Cooks is worth more than Johnson.

I completely agree.

But that isn't why we'd need to get a return. It isn't just Cooks for him straight up. It is Cooks with 1 year left on a rookie deal + a 5th year option. That has more value than a franchised cornerback, not under contract, looking at a $17m 2017 price tag.

We can just sign a FA corner for a similar price tag as he will demand
