We really aren't in salary cap hell. Last year was worse

1) Saints are in “salary cap hell”, per some self-appointed "capologist"
2) Loomis makes it happen, shifting money around to get under the cap
3) "Capologists"---who are stumped because they don’t understand the cap as well as a guy who has an accounting degree, over 30 years of NFL front office experience AND runs operations for an NBA franchise---stubbornly say, “Well, he can’t do that again next year”.
4) Next year comes, Saints are in “salary cap hell”, per some self-appointed capologist. Wash-rinse-repeat.

Projected $20m over cap, and guess who = $20m?
Evans and Grubbs. I wouldn't value them anywhere close to that. I don't know how much dead money is tied up in those two, but I'm sure there could be some cap savings in the Guard department that would put the FO well on their way to fix this issue.

I keep seeing people calling Mickey Loomis a magician. Look, this is not magic...the money situation will eventually catch up to us, which it did this year.

You set a team up for a time-frame with the best team you can put on the field. Loomis has filled holes in drafting with FA the best way he could IMO. Also, if you look at the run the Saints have had, you are looking at a playoff appearance every year except 2012. That is very good sustained success.
-Reggie Bush leaves we get Sproles (upgrade).
-Carl Nicks leaves for TB, we get Grubbs at a savings (compared to what Nicks got in Tampa).
-Bushrod leaves and they draft his replacement (the Brown nonsense was a poor coaching decision).
-Jenkins/Harper gone, we get Byrd. No, this investment has not come to fruition yet. But if we get a good corner in the draft / Jean-Baptiste turns from project to success, then you have 2 good corners with Lewis and Byrd can be that deep guy they paid for.
What he is doing with contracts is smart, it put us in the best position to compete for a time. Yes, we will eventually have to pay the piper and we will have a period of rock bottom. It's just how it is. But you can't ask for more out of a GM imo, except maybe draft better. But then again, it's well established that Mickey is more of the numbers guy and depends on others in the org for talent evaluation.
We still have another 2-3 years where the Saints can compete. However, we have reached the threshold and the draft will be less forgiving going forward. Our capacity to fill holes in FA are diminished from here on out.

if you read all the way to the end of the article, the end game is made clear...sacrifice the future for the present while brees is under contract, then when he's not (for whatever reason), blow it up, take your dead cap money medicine, then start over

We'll stay under the cap, but the problem is efficiently using cap money
Every dollar spent here is one less spent there
Jimmy's effort and performance make him a bad signing
Same with Evans
Drew' performance...well it's par for the money but only because guys like flacco and cutler signed monster deals.
Byrd? Awesome player, but again...so much need, we overspent on one position

Exactly. Which means we will be feeling the effect of these signings for longer than they are around the building.
What he is trying to do is smart, but eventually it's going to catch up to us. Hopefully, it's after Brees retires which is what I believe they are trying to accomplish.

So how did it catch up to us this year?

I agree

The cap thing would not be a huge deal if they could have supplemented the roster with valuable draft picks on cheaper deals
Fact is, our team sucks at drafting, which exposes the shitty overpaid veteran contracts even more

Lol the criticism is fair.

All Loomis is doing is postponing problems from year to year. Putting off cap hell to another year, each season. It's like borrowing money, not being able to repay it and borrowing more money to repay the previous debt.

Postponing problems? That would hint that we don't suck. I could handle looking at a terrible future if the present didn't blow too.

After brees retires we're going to be rebuilding anyway.

Which is all any GM does. More often than not, it ends up being someone else's problem to deal with at some point.

Which GM doesn't and how many of those sort are there?
