Assessing all 3 phases after the 3rd preseason game.

I'd like to hear other people's assessment of each unit so far.
For me the offense is slightly worrisome. Sure we usually find a rhythm once the season starts, but we can all agree that our back up o-line is trash, and I haven't really seen consistent quality run blocking. We have a nice backfield but it won't matter if the holes aren't there. Could be a down year for the offense.
On the other hand we all thought Drew was going to get killed last preseason and then the o-line turned out to be pretty stout.
I'm very optimistic about the defense for a couple of reasons. For one I don't see a lot of busted plays that we've been known for, and I think a lot of it has to do with what's happening pre snap. Klein is getting everyone into position and no one is lost when the ball is snapped. Tackling is solid all around. We're closing in fast on receivers. Run defense is phenomenal.
Probably what I like the most is they're aggressive and look like they're having fun. You can tell they've brought in and playing for each other.
In the return game I think you just let Ginn handle it. He's comfortable doing it, gets consistent yards, and you'll get max value out of him that way for his contract. Lutz hasn't missed yet, Moorsted is booming it, and outside of one return the coverage teams have been very good.

Most concerned about oline and secondary depth
Most encouraged by front 7, specifically linebackers. Considering the awful play of that unit in the past any semblance of consistency is refreshing. Hiring Nolan could prove to be the best move all offseason.

I'm seeing it shape up as a make or break sort of year. Not talking about Payton or Loomis but overall performance. Much of the success of the season will weigh on rookies at LT & CB. I think as much will fall on the performance of Klien also. So far, so good! It looks like a squad ready to move away from being abysmal defensively. The path to respect could be a tightrope walk though.
I have a lot of hope that there will be tangible improvement from the coaching overhaul. Again, so far, so good. Let's hope we're cussing McMahon, Vitt, Johnson, etc even more at the end of the year.
Definitely see breaking away from the 7-9 dance. There are so many huge unknowns it could be 11-5 or 5-11. It should be a lot more interesting either way.

The Dline has been the best unit so far.
Special Teams in all phases miles ahead of past seasons.
Even with two back ups no sacks on Brees and that is what we must have at minimum.
It's been a better team so far than I expected.
Ready for game one!

Brees has played roughly a half this entire preseason, and you make this statement.

The OL is a concern.
We have no timetable on Ram.

It's the o-line man.
We don't know what's up with Ram, and Armstead is out. You think we're rolling like usual with Harris or Barnes at LT?

Secondary depth? You realize that S is probably the deepest position and CB....hell, the 4th and 5th guys have seen extensive time the last two games. No points given up.

I think that getting Unger back for week 1 will have a huge calming influence. Also, we aren't exactly scheming blocking protection help in the preseason. If Ram is out week 1, I would expect to hear a lot of "___ reporting as eligible" to help with blocking assignments. We could also see Kelemete kick out to LT and leave the rest of the line solidified. That has worked in the past. No matter what happens at LT, I do believe that Unger is the biggest piece of the puzzle.

The only thing that still has me positive about the offense is that we still haven't seen Unger at all and Ram's only played a few snaps. While Ram isn't Armstead hopefully he can hold it down long enough for him to come back.
I think Thomas has looked excellent with Snead dependable as usual. If anything I think the run game is what's most worrisome, but I think that goes back to still not having seen the starting O-line together yet.
Defense has looked great from what we've seen. If Williams and Lattimore can stay on the field I think our secondary will be fine. I really like what I see out of M Williams at S as well.

A valid concern, but I think getting Unger back will help tremendously (week 1 he should be back) and we can hopefully give the left side some help with extra blockers. At least until Ram and/or Armstead can get back.

The play calling for the run game has been vanilla as all hell. Ingram made his yards running out of spread, 3-4 wr sets last year. Last night it was basic I formation, 1-2 wr, or 1-2 te shite.
