Article on Jimmy Graham in ESPN Magazine

I was just reading the article, mostly about things we've heard 100 times (his upbringing, basketball, contract negotiations), but there were a coupe things in there that I never knew.
I have a hard time seeing Jimmy confronting Brees, then brushing him off, but who knows.

Nothing Earth-shattering, but like I said, there were a few things in there that I never knew.
quote:
According to a source close to Graham, he was extremely annoyed when Brees -- who got a $100 million contract in 2012 after threatening to hold out if he got the franchise tag -- told a USA Today reporter he'd like to have Graham back but that if not the team could manage fine without him. The Saints had, after all, done just fine before he was drafted, Brees pointed out. Oh, and Graham was definitely a tight end in Brees' mind. The comments seemed to violate the agreement among NFL players that you don't talk about other people's contract situations. At the very least, it seemed like bad form to choose sides publicly in a fight between your teammate and your employer. That same source says Graham confronted Brees when the two bumped into each other at an offseason event. The quarterback tried to smooth things over, shifting the blame to the media, but Graham wasn't exactly buying it.

quote:Had no idea that the Patriots expressed interest in him even before he played at Miami. Him and Gronk on the same team would be unreal.
Graham planned to play basketball in Europe after graduation, Haith says. But then the New England Patriots sent word that they'd be interested in inviting him to camp to mold him into a football player, despite his complete lack of gridiron experience. Graham talked it over with Haith and then-Miami football coach Randy Shannon, and Shannon agreed to let him play for the Hurricanes for a season while he attended grad school.
quote:This part is probably a bit exaggerated to add drama to the article.
You have to wonder what effect all of this has had on the on-field dynamic, or lack thereof, between the Saints' star quarterback and his tight end. During a recent practice, Brees fired a pass to Graham in between two defenders, a perfect ball that practically whistled as it knifed through the sticky Louisiana air. It thumped off Graham's hands with an awkward thud, flopping to the ground like a bird that had just slammed into a sliding glass door. The quarterback looked away, avoiding eye contact. Graham, in turn, never once glanced back at Brees. Three plays later, Brees threw another perfect ball to Graham, this time for a touchdown, which Graham celebrated by elaborately pretending to dunk over an imaginary goalpost. But Brees, all business, already had his back turned, prepared to call the next play.

watching the game yesterday, I really do believe this. brees was irritated at graham after he pegged him in the leg, graham kept looking away and walking while drew was trying to say something. drew gave an irritated look and went the other way in frustration

That play was bizarre. I think what happened was Graham ran the wrong route and Brees was pissed. I mean he purposefully nailed him in the leg and when they put the camera on him he was holding up a number 2 and looking pissed and shaking his head.
Weird shite.

I don't know if he purposefully drilled him, but that was definitely an icy interaction...in a tight game

Just my thoughts and opinion ... which will likely piss off the die-hards that get mad about anything remotely negative said about anyone on "their" team....
..and, it is tough, because one of my son's favorite player is Jimmy Graham.
Three things bother me a little:
1) The disappearing act in the playoffs.
2) I go back and forth on this ... one minute, he is hurdling some dude ... the next, he catches a pass and then falls down when he could get more yards ... or, he runs out of bounds before the first down marker when he could simply take on typically a much smaller guy.
3) Not convinced that Jimmy ain't all about Jimmy (which, yes, could be said about a lot of NFL players).
Not convinced that the Saints/Brees/Graham marriage ... will end pretty when it is all said and done.
Hope that I am wrong.

Pretty spot on assesment Navy. I go back to the old saying. There are two kinds of receivers. The ones that catch passes over the middle and the kind that dont even go over the middle. J. Graham is a talented te, but I think he's a little soft, and Seattle thinks so too.

I thought the thing with the dunking in the pre-season game was pretty childish as well.
Hey ... we've all got to follow rules in life.
Even Jimmy.
