Idk how they got these numbers but it ranks Cole Beasley ahead of Antonio Brown. Reason number 1 million not to put too much stock in football stats and analytics.

Just looked at it some more. Odell ranked at 29th so yea this is a bunch of nonsense.

Also Tavon Austin apparently has a -220 DYAR. I don't even know what that means but that doesn't seem good.

Nelson & A Brown have more receptions, yards, TDs, and less fumbles and are ranked lower than M Thomas bc this site has an overly complex formula in order to "better judge" a player.

And given the range that M Thomas ranks over them, my guess is they grossly overrate some arbitrary number just so they can have something different

A Brown: 106 rec, 1,284 yds, 12TDs, 1 fumble
Nelson: 97 rec, 1,257 yds, 14 TDs, 1 fumble
M Thomas: 92 rec, 1,137 yds, 9 TDs, 2 fumbles

They all had 2 drops

Yet, I am suppose to believe that Nelson ranks 13% below Thomas & Brown ranks 36% below Thomas

There is also no way to account for coverage, double teams, who it was against, or any of the other variables of the play. Comparing stats for football players is stupid.

Beasley is a top 5 WR huh? People are still laughing at you.

M. Thomas was not a top 5 WR this year.

He will be, but he wasn't this year.

Football Outsiders is good for overall units (offense and defense) but tends to be poo for individual players.

It's the NFL's version of BMI.

These threads are great because they always end with pages of posts from the regulars apologizing to the OP and lauding his brilliance

If the OP would have actually read the stat, you can see why high volume receivers would get punished:

quote:

Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement. This gives the value of the performance on plays where this WR caught the ball, compared to replacement level, adjusted for situation and opponent and then translated into yardage.

the website and stat doesn't claim what OP claims.

It also adjusts adjusts for defense, and the Saints played the Broncos and Seahawks secondaries. The difference is that Thomas has Cooks and Snead to take pressure off him in these games.

Also from the website:

quote:

We cannot yet fully separate the performance of a receiver from the performance of his quarterback. Be aware that one will affect the other.

Not many other QBs can make that back shoulder throw with perfection consistently like Brees can. One of the reasons they are effective together.

quote:

These statistics measure only passes thrown to a receiver, not performance on plays when he is not thrown the ball, such as blocking and drawing double teams.

One thing I really like about Football Outsiders is that they are aware of the flaws in their analytics. It is a good source for information, but isn't meant to be used idiotically like the OP used it.

What about pancake blocks and recovering fumbles? If it included that stuff Thomas would be #1! He very frequently was followed by the teams #1 corner
