I'd like to note a couple things.

He's been an NFL coach since 1979. Never has he been a defensive coordinator. That's a long time with no coordianting promotion. Secondly, he's worked mostly LB's and DB's. I do not think at this time he's ever been the LB coach of a 3-4 Defense. I think that's kind of the most important coach in our new system.

We have a secondary Coach void right now.

Joe Vitt's not getting fired.

Shall we move him to Secondary coach and hire a LB coach with more 3-4 expertise to help support and implement the new defense with our TBD Coordinator?

I think the Saints will keep him on. He is the only one of the coaches standing up for Benson and the team, it seems.
He should be fine coaching the new LB scheme. 34 years in the league, he should know 3-4 scheme.

he seems to be paytons right hand man. while he may keep the tile, I am sure he will be more of a quality control guy than actually drawing up the scheme and stuff.

Your assertion that he does not know the 34 is without proof.

"In Sean I Trust", Chad can sit and enjoy the ride like the rest of us.

Whatever the role he stays. The DB idea is a good one. he has been a DB coach in the NFL for 8 years (Seahwaks 4, Rams 3, Packers 1) Even tho no HC or DC twice he has been the choice as interim HC. That sez a lot about his leadership.

Vitt resume

Joe Jr. is a Saints scout too

34 years. Vitt has probably forgotten more football then any of us will ever know. I think he would be fine as LB coach. But, whoever the Saints hire to be the DC will probably bring in their own guy to fill that spot.

Are we going to hire a Defensive Coordinator thats never coached a 3-4 before?

Then why would we want the most important assistant coach to have no experience coaching the 3-4 system as well? We will be transitioning many LB's who have little or to no NFL 3-4 experience, i think we need an experienced assistant to help us get on the fast track. Maybe it'll be good for Joe to see a change of pace in his coaching with the secondary.

I think you're looking a little too hard into it.

Look at a guy like Jim Leavitt, the LB coach for 49ers, former head coach of USF, never ran a 3-4, yet the 49ers have the best linebackers in the league.

It's more about being able to teach at this level, not necessarily position coaches fitting a certain system, and Vitt should be able to do fine there.

I agree that having a LB coach who's focus is the 3-4 would be better suited for the job. If one is not available then Vitt is serviceable. I would be interested to see him work with the DB's/Secondary.

Maybe Maybe not i'm looking too hard into it, but that's exactly What Payton needs to be doing is looking very hard into it. Vitt is a guy with a dual background with LB and DB coaching experience. We have an option to move him around if its serving a greater purpose. A greater purpose which i think is clearly obvious.

agree, AND motivate- which I have no doubt is one of Vitt's specialties. The DC is more the schemer. The position guys are more on specific technique polishing is the way I see them. Joe has found his niche and is happy there. Just like some are good coordinators (Romeo or Haslett) but not cut out for HCing, some are position coaches and not coordinators.

Teaching Technique of something he's never taught before. Blues, do you see where he's been involved in a 3-4 D before in his career?

He hasn't coached DB's in over 10 years, seems like he's found his niche as a LB/Assistant head coach. Why not bring in a guy who has experience with DBs in the last 10 years?

Because unlike a 3-4 system, He's at least coached DB's before. DB's in a 3-4 system have the smallest amount of change at least schematically and technique wise than the DL's and LB's.

You're capable of looking it up, have at it-

1979-1981 Baltimore Colts (Quality Control)
1982 Seattle Seahawks (Quality Control)
1983-1987 Seattle Seahawks (Asst LB)
1988-1991 Seattle Seahawks (FS/SS)
1992-1994 Los Angeles Rams (DB)
1995-1998 Philadelphia Eagles (LB)
1999 Green Bay Packers (DB)
2000-2003 Kansas City Chiefs (LB)
2004-2005 St. Louis Rams (Asst HC/LB)

Position coaches aren't locked in to certain schemes. There's been many position coaches that have gone from a 3-4 to a 4-3 or vice versa.

I understand and concede that theory. But answer this, could we be better off for it though? There lies the heart of the discussion.
