Remember this? I didn't like the saying, but I tended to agree. I said I'd be thrilled to death with a top 15 defense, but I'd be satisfied with the mid 20's.

Well, we have a defense that's pretty dang good, and now our offense is regressing.

Play calling is awful and lopsided. I can't tell you how pissed I was at the swing pass out of the backfield (where Thomas caught it 5 yards behind the LOS) on a 3rd and 2 deep in our own territory.

All our skill position players are looking slow, even Sproles.

Seems like Drew is having trouble connecting deep.

All I can say about yesterday is at least the game was competitive. We hadn't had a competitive road game in a while, but it really hurts to lose that game almost the same exact way as NE. What was Cory White doing on that last play? He's the only receiver on your side and he's making an inside move. How do you not know he's cutting outside?

It just seems like we don't learn our lessons this year, which makes these losses harder to take.

The biggest problem this year is playcalling on offense.

Turnover margin is the problem. We are minus on the season.

I agree, which makes our deficiencies more noticeable. He seems unable or unwilling to adjust. Maybe because the last time he coached, he set the record for yards in a year. IDK. It seems a bit of arrogance mixed with confusion.

Careful now....the pumpers will be out in full force quoting our total offensive rank and reminding you that Payton is "the best playcaller in the NFL"

I think the year away hurt his feel for the game. He used to be the best at calling the perfect at the perfect time. Not so much this year. Offensive line has hurt, but you play St.Louis and Carolina, both with GREAT pass rushes, and you go pass heavy with a glaring weakness at LT. 100% Payton's fault, especiall yesterday when the run game was working.

I HATE the one hanf off, back to the bench substitute 8 players BS. I don't why they feel the need to sub so much EVERY PLAY

I wanted to say something yesterday but didn't b/c the defense played lights out and has for most of the season minus one or two games, but it just seems like they haven't forced a turnover in a month.

The defense is solid, but not opportunistic. Once the offense turns the ball over the D never gets us the possession back. We are the only team in league without a defensive or special teams touchdown as well.

They did get a turnover after a long drought, but the lack of turnovers doesn't bother me if we're forcing punts. The offense couldn't do anything with the ball when we did get a turnover.

it's funny, I was thinking the same exact thing all season long...for LSU. LSU has had rather terrible offenses for quite a few years and top 5 defenses at the same time. We finally have a competent, really solid offense this year, and it's the first year our D was far, far away from elite. Terrible timing.

Same thing seems to be happening with the Saints, probably on a somewhat smaller scale. We finally have a good D(save for 2009), and now the offense is regressing.

I do have much, much more confidence though in the Saints offense coming around than I did in that LSU D though.

Maybe the play calling is bad because the line is bad. People keep looking for new problems to fix because the problem that's been there all season can't really be helped until next year.

who cares about turnovers when you are holding teams to less than 20 points? how about the offense not turn the ball over so much?

Because CONFUSION!

Look, I'm not going to be one of those fire Payton types because he and Drew Brees are the best thing this franchise has ever had going for it. You're right, I don't see the benefit of doing all that subbing when all they really need to do is get two yards on 2nd down. It's just maddening. Ingram for 8, see you in the third quarter.

One of my issues is people are blasting the Oline in one thread(fair criticisms given their performance yesterday), but then they blast Sean Payton on a couple of those failed screen calls in other threads. Seems like you can't really do both.

This is true, but you can't really do much about that until the season's over. That's where coaching and playcalling come in.

You have a new LT, so let's pass every down. The Saints, to their credit, ran the ball effectively. However, they didn't string the runs together very well and control the ball. The stats will say the Saints had the ball twice as long as the Panthers, but it's how they control it that bothers me. Like I said earlier, they get a good chunk on first down then let's sub in the 5 WR set and throw two incomplete passes or get a -5 yard gain with a screen pass that everyone knows is coming. It's just maddening.

Then...I'm complaining about a 10-5 football team. In New Orleans.

"we don't need top wrs because we have drew"

"Drew can make any o line look good"

Not blaming Drew but have been screaming that he needs help for 2 years now.

While the line is bad, the play calling isn't adjusting to it.

People care about turnovers. I promise.

Turnovers made our mediocre defense look all world in '09. As good as our offense "can" be, forcing them to drive the length of the field all game long is not conducive to a good day.

All the more reason he shouldn't be calling 60 pass plays a game. With a deficiency at LT

It's easy to blame the playcalling, but I'm pretty sure the play calling is a product of a very bad offensive line which doesn't allow for a great running game or for much to develop in the passing game and to a lesser extent an aging WR corp who just cant get seperation. I'd love to see more running to set up play action deep routes, but neither can effectively happen when you can't block. How can you call anything but short passes and screens and feel comfortable about it?
