I mean, it wasn't THAT long ago, but I really don't remember a lot of it. I just remember that it was like torture. I'd sit there and bite my nails every Sunday, and say to myself "I'm sick of this crap. I'm not watching anymore games this year." No matter how upset I was about the previous week, I couldn't not watch a game.
Beating the Rams in back to back games was super sweet. Getting smoked by the Vikings the following week was heart breaking.
I was on deployment for the 2005 season opener. I watched the game on the ship. I was the only Saints fan on the mess deck. That was a painful game.
I was also on deployment for the 2006 playoffs. My unit was on 3 day patrolling rotation, so I miss both playoff games.
The 2009 season I missed one game, the second Tampa Bay game, and I rewatched it later. I did everything I could not to miss a game because I knew that season was special after the Dolphins comeback.

Luckily I was only like 10 years old during the heart of the Haslett era, the only thing I really remember is crying a lot. I wish I still had my Aaron Brooks jersey

I was all on board for Haz. Who wasn't with the first playoff win in team history? 2001 I was still there. The end of that season was trying though. They were 7-5 but lost the last 4 straight by a combined score of 52-160. Like many I lost all faith at the end of 2002. At 9-4 Brooks was injured and Haz refused to insert Jake. The writing was on the wall from that point to me.
Haz even admitted that was his downfall later (at least he was honest)-
"We had a chance to go to the playoffs, and I got hardheaded because Aaron Brooks got hurt," Haslett told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch last week. "I should've put the backup in, and didn't. Everybody wanted the backup in, and I didn't. In hindsight, I probably should have because the backup turned out to be a pretty darn good quarterback, Jake Delhomme."
At the time, nobody knew much about Delhomme, who had appeared in six games in six seasons. The Saints decided not to bring him back in the spring of 2003.
Delhomme then signed a free-agent deal with Carolina, took over as the starter at halftime in Week 1, and led the Panthers to the Super Bowl.
Delhomme guided the Panthers to the NFC championship game and was picked for the Pro Bowl two years later -- the same year Haslett was fired after the Saints went 3-13.

Haslett and Mueller were a good combo going into 2000. I've never seen a professional roster turned over like that in one off-season.
It really went far in washing the Ditka stink off the franchise.
Those first few games of the season, before Blake got injured against Oakland were the most exciting Saints football since the early 90s.
It's a shame that Meuller and Benson couldn't get along. I'm happy for the work Loomis has done, but I'm curious how different the Haslett era would have been overall had Blake not dislocated his foot and had Meuller not gotten fired.

I have pretty good memories of Haslett. I was fully on board with the hire and the end of the trainwreck that was the Ditka era.
At the time Haslett was the second best coach the Saints had ever had and it was (sadly) probably the second best era of Saints football at the time. He got the team its second ever division title and its first playoff win. He kept the team together during the 2005 season, and a lot of the players from his era transitioned into the current Saints golden age.

That team was so much fun to watch through the first 13 games. Started 6-1 and I believe all or most of those wins were over playoff teams.
Then came the last 3 games. The loss at home to the fricking Vikings, who win on a 2-point conversion on the last play of the game. Then they lose to Cincy (who would finish 2-14). Then they are dominated at home by fricking Carolina.
Had the won just ONE of those games, they would have been in the playoffs.
That season was a microcosm of the Haslett era. Flashes of brilliance (6-1 start, sweeping the eventual world champions), but ultimately frustration and mediocrity.
I loved it though. I was too young to remember the Dome Patrol days. I grew up in the tail-end of the Mora era and the Ditka era. My earliest memory of the Saints was Mora's "diddly poo" rant. I couldn't believe it when my Dad had to explain to me that he was the best coach the franchise had ever had.
The Haslett era was exciting for the potential those teams had, and heartbreaking to watch them constantly shoot themselves in the foot

This almost killed me. I almost lost it during this season. We only had to win 1 of 3 to go to the playoffs against the worst teams in the league and we couldn't do it. After the final game ended I just stared at the T.V. for a while not moving

I have a greater appreciation for what haslett did, in the end, he's not a coach that should make personnel decisions, once loomis came into the fold, he had that and it was disastrous.

I grew up with the Haskett era teams...as frustrating as they were too watch thy gave us a lot of good memorable moments as well. And despite everything we were in the playoff hunt every year save for 2005. Had he benched Brooks in '02 and had Doug Martin made the kick vs St Louis, Haz would have been to the playoffs three out of five years.

yeah, its a lot easier to remember the Haslett Era than the Mora one for me. I would have still been in grade school when the Saints made those playoff appearances in the early 90's. Back then it was all about stout defense and pretty solid special teams play. Seems like the main recollection I have is Morrten Andersen kicking a bunch of field goals. And that defense harassing the QB
but in that 2000 season, it definitely had a different feel to it. We kept having players get hurt but we were still winning games. Losing your starting QB and RB can be crippling to a team, especially in those years because the league wasn't as pass happy and Ricky was a workhorse type back. I think my favorite memory of that year besides the playoff win vs. the Rams was the beatdown we put on the 49ers at the Dome. That was one of the best first halfs I had ever seen the Saints play up to that point.

Not that it really matters, but we didn't beat them back to back weeks if I remember correctly. I think we lost the season finale against them, then obviously came back the next week and beat them.
