I'm actually fine with our depth at the tackle spots. It's the interior that's lacking, but keep in mind that during the season, you have your starters and then one guy who backs up all the positions. So in reality we just need one guy to step up behind the starters.

P-Rob can play. It's just a matter if he's healthy or not.

I'm curious too how Payton will use Cooks. I worry about his frame in the slot position, but from what I've seen from his college games he is pretty tough for his size. I think the Saints will run more bunch formations to help disguise the routes, which will mean Cooks could be used in a traditional slot role or as a burner. His speed gives him a lot of versatility. I like Stills better for the starter at the slot WR position and you can use Morgan or Meachem for the standard clear outs. Basing off of Payton's philosophy in New Orleans, I think Toon will be everywhere.

Devon Walker was put on the reserved injured/retired list yesterday.

As for our Oline depth, I have a feeling that if one of the young guys doesn't step up as a starting C or the backup C/G that we will a dress that issue with a vet. RT should be fine with the number of bodies we have there. LT will be manned by Strief should Armstead go down and that's the only thing that really concerns me.

On Cooks and Stills that's what I was talking about with them being interchangeable. They can and will be used for either role, though there's things each can do that the other may not be able to.

On Cooks size, he is a solid 5'10" 190lbs. There are tons of guys in the league at that size and many don't have a bad injury history (everyone in the league gets hurt at some point though). The Seahawks won the SB with 3 guys at his size as their starters.

On Toon, I agree he will be everywhere but I had to chose one spot to put him under here and I think that will be his main role (although not by much).

I agree. Guard depth is weak now only because Lelito looks like the starting center. This team looks so deep that almost any position we draft next year is going to be depth and future starters. Next year I think we draft either a Center (If Lelito doesn't work out) early and use Lelito as depth or draft a Guard early for depth and to hopefully replace one of our aging and increasingly expensive guards.

Hell that was basically our draft this year. We added one part time starter in the first and everyone else won't be a starter for at least another year(if they develop).

Looking at our FAs next year the only starters we might lose would be Galette(if he hits 12 sacks) and Butler or Haralson depending on where Butler plays(as more of a rush OLB like Galette or the same role as Haralson), and if they play the same spot which one plays more. Butler and Haralson are more part time guys though.

That is before potential cuts are taken into account though.

Well SJB has a chance to start albeit a small chance but your point remains.

I'm hoping for 11.5 sacks for Junior. It's a testament to Sean and Mickey that our expected needs next off season are Center (maybe), and replacements for part time players. That is unless we lose Junior in which case an Olb/De becomes a glaring need. A lot can change by next off season through.

From what I've heard, Drew actually makes the line calls, which makes the center position easier. I think Lelito will be capable of doing a fine job.

I can't see any way JB starts over Bailey, Robinson, and White though I do see him being worked in to the nickel at times. He's still a bit green only having been a CB for 2 years but they did say he is picking things up quickly.

And yeah losing Galette and Butler next year would make getting another pass rusher more of a priority but it could also mean a bigger role for Foster.

No matter how things shake out we have fall back options. That'll allow us to target the players we want in the draft like we were able to do this year.

Edit:
Just to add to the options point, Ryan actually said at rookie camp that we'll run whatever works best for the team and the players, whether that's a 3-4, a 4-3, or whatever.

That was part of my point of bringing up Foster. If we lose Galette(who basically is a DE without being called one) we can just insert Foster on the weakside and have Jordan, Hicks, Jenkins, and Foster as our starting 4 Dlinemen.

Personally, I don't think Cooks will play the slot, not that he isn't interchangeable there considering his skills as you have said.

But you've acknowledged on record that he is arguably a Steve Smith clone and Smith isn't a slot guy, despite the size & quickness you'd think would have Smith cemented to slot. Also considering Cooks is taller & heavier than Smith and played outside in Riley's pro system. I think he's battling Morgan for the starting spot there.

Now Stills played slot in his soph year in college and outside his last year as a junior. His play last year as a rookie basically made Moore expendable. I could be wrong, but I think Stills is our slot.

The question I have is are you speaking about the slot position from a route tree perspective or from a literal perspective? If the latter then Colston would likely be our starting slot receiver.

As I said I'm talking more route tree here than where they are lining up.

And yes Stills was a pretty polished WR coming out in part because he did play from both positions in college and Payton said he was surprised he was sitting there in the 5th. I think if we had another 3rd or 4th rounder that year we would have taken him there.

On Smith, it only goes back to 2007 but Smith did play a good bit of slot between 2007 and 2010(4 years). It was anywhere between 27% to 45%.

It dropped dramatically in 2011 in part because of having a new coordinator and getting Newton as his QB, but I imagine being the only really good WR on the squad was also the reason Chud left him on the outside most(not all) of the time.

But that is again the literal position. Smith is versatile enough to line up anywhere and be successful. Cooks should be too.

Now if you are talking about him running the flys, deep posts, slant and gos, etc. most of the time I think it's hard to say. I know he can and will do those just like Stills can and will but the question is who will run those more.

The reason I think Cooks will be used more as the shorter range quick guy is because his game is tailor made for that with his explosiveness and he could be much more effective in that role than Stills, whereas running the deep routes is a bit more of a push between them.

I think Cooks has a slight top end speed advantage(not initial acceleration as Cooks has that hands down) and Stills has an advantage in high pointing the ball and coming back to find it.

I think you'll see Kenny Vacarro move to the nickelback (slot CB) more often this year. Bush will slide right in behind him like Roman did for us last year.

As far as the defensive backfield is concerned, you'll probably see a rotation of about 6 players IMO.

Good depth at D-Line
On paper, defense is definitely the more talented bunch.

Jean-Baptiste can learn alot from Veteran Champ Bailey and become a very dangerous asset for New Orleans. This defense could be very special this year.

Not that he can't or won't play nickel but Vaccaro was used there a lot last year because of our lack of CB depth(as was Jenkins). That's not an issue this year. Lack of depth and injuries is also one of the reasons we used 3 safeties so much also(another being our depth was better at safety).

Payton talked about narrowing Vaccaro's role this year and I think that means less slot and deep coverage and much more being in the box helping with the run and covering TEs and HBs.

I can still see Bush coming in when we want to play more two deep, but better depth across the board may lessen his playing time.
