With 2 good MLBs and a roster decision looming for Will Smith, would a transition to 3-4 be better suited for this team? Let's be honest, couldn't be worse than what we saw out of 4-3 this year.

Cam Jordan is big enough to be a 3-4 end, and one of our tackles could hold the other end (we have small DTs anyways). Draft a guy like mingo to be an olb and get a big dt in draft and free agency.

Thoughts?

Doubt we will do it unless we get rid of Spags

theoretically its possible but assuming we stay with spags who doesn't run a 3-4, they aren't going to switch systems for a 2nd year in a row. Spags system showed a flash of brilliance at the near end of year.

I don't think he's ever ran a 3-4, and let's say he decides to: we're putting ourselves back further. He was able to get some personnel for his system, but he still had to work with a bunch of guys who didn't.

Agree to disagree. I just think times are a changing and you have to change with them. Look around the league and a lot of the big playmakers are hybrid guys perfectly suited for the 3-4 olb. There are more and more of these guys coming out of college as well.

Pat I believe we have pieces for the 3-4 personel. That's why I am making the suggestion.

You can't disagree with a shutout, its a factual statement.

No, but I can disagree with results. And this season wasn't pretty. One game is an anomaly.

Hicks/Bunkley could hold down an end, and Galette would look good as a rush olb. Just need a nose and those can be had in 3rd-4th rounds of the draft.

They performed well in other games as well. We started getting more turnovers. The defense performed really well against Atlanta.

Topics been beaten to death, we've been talking about this for like 2-3 years. It all sounds very logical with the pieces we have, i've argued the same too. Realistically, if they are keeping spags... its not happening.

Vilma doesn't have much time left in his career, and he isn't suited for the 3-4 anyway. The reason he was traded from New York was because they switched to a 3-4. There is also a lot more personnel necessary for the 3-4 that we would have to acquire. nose tackle, rushing outside lb(maybe martez fits here). another olb. Maybe we could force hicks into the other de spot. Really we don't have nearly the personnel, and it would take a couple of years at least to get it. And we have Spags.

Look around the league it doesn't matter what type of defense, it's about having good players and good coaching. Teams win playing 4-3 or 3-4, one isn't better than the other. Last yr superbowl champions ran a 4-3. The obsession with the 3-4 is ridiculous.

The advantages of the 3-4 is it's stronger against the pass because you're able to disguise your coverages and blitzes better. Spags does some 3-4ish stuff by dropping some of our more mobile DE's into coverage, and he uses zone blitzes, which are a 3-4 staple.

I do not disagree with you. I'm saying the players you have should dictate the formation that you run. My opinion is we are better suited to run a 3-4.

As of now, we really have no players that have played/excelled in a 3-4 system in the NFL.

Yep, and that should pretty much end the thread, but it won't.

I personally prefer a 3-4 and feel like there are a lot more pass rushers coming out now that are more suited for it than the 4-3.
