re: 2013 NFL Draft -- Saints Mock Draft CompliationPosted by CocoLoco on 4/15/13 at 7:15 am to blueslover
From the looks of it, it seems that most people creating mocks feel good about the Saints getting either Mingo or Jones.
What would you give as the overall chance that we land either Jones or Mingo? Percentage wise guesstimation.
I'd be ecstatic if we got either, but I do want Jones more. This is honestly the most excited I think i have ever been for a draft.

Not a cop out but I see right at 50/50 Jones or Mingo being available. I'd throw Ansah in right with them too. 50/50 for any of them. Can work plenty of scenarios where all are gone or one available.
I'd make this as a high probability scenario- Two of the top 4 pass rushers could easily be the Jets choice. The Saints pick might be as simple as taking whoever the Jets do not take.
Caveat with the Jets- I think it is more likely than not that the Bucs get Revis. That would likely mean that the Jets have #9 & #13.
/prompts discussion idea...
What are the most likely trades to impact #15?
1. Revis to TB
2. Miami moves up from #12 to get a LT
3. Minnesota moves up for a WR (best potential trade down partner for Saints IMO)
4. SF consolidates some picks upwards, maybe

So I was pondering trades and came across this- kinda a cumulative look at possible trades. I like the one they did...
at #15 Jones & Mingo BOTH on the board. So the Saints trade back to #18 for a 4th rder and still get one of them.

1. Chiefs: Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M. Those who have been close to the team believe the Chiefs are zeroed in on Joeckel.
2. Jaguars: Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon. They have made a lot of noise about quarterbacks. Too much noise, perhaps?
3. Raiders: Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida. He is a good value at this point, and he fills one of their most pressing needs.
4. Eagles: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia. He is creeping up the board. If the Eagles pass, the Browns and Bills are threats to take him.
5. Lions: Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan. This is the perfect pick for the Lions: They find a replacement for Jeff Backus in their backyard.
6. Browns: Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama. In this scenario, they also could be a threat to take a guard: Chance Warmack or Jonathan Cooper.
7. Cardinals: Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma. The word is Johnson won't get past the seventh pick. That could mean a team will try to leapfrog the Cards.
8. Bills: Chance Warmack, G, Alabama. After losing Andy Levitre, the Bills need a player who can serve as the foundation for their offensive line.
9. Jets: Barkevious Mingo, DE/OLB, LSU. Ziggy Ansah might be rated higher by many teams, but Mingo is a better fit for Rex Ryan's defense.
10. Titans: Ziggy Ansah, DE, BYU. Defensive end is not their most pressing need, but Ansah would be too good to pass up.
11. Chargers: Jonathan Cooper, G, North Carolina. What they really need is an offensive tackle, but none of the top three will last this long.
12. Dolphins: Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State. They could use a left tackle too, but they aren't going to get one here. One of the guards also could be appealing.
13. Buccaneers: Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah. They could trade this pick for a veteran cornerback or draft Rhodes if he is available. But Lotulelei could be hard to pass.
14. Panthers: Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri. Other possibilities are cornerback and wide receiver. But Richardson would be a great fit.
15. Saints: Alec Ogletree, ILB, Georgia. He has the talent to justify being picked here. The Saints also could be tempted by a defensive end or safety Kenny Vaccaro
Dan Pompei
I could see Ogletree as the pick but it would be a surprise over Jones if he was on the board. Other than that, as most mocks, this one is starting to define consensus now.

throwing in a Peter King MMQB comment-
9. New York Jets. Rex Ryan might want a corner (is the Pope an Argentinean?) but I hear he's awfully smitten with Barkevious (brother of Hughtavious) Mingo of LSU.

Charles Davis:
Highly doubt he is available at 15, but you never know I guess. None of the picks before us seem too crazy, except for Eifert at 13. A D-line of Star, Hicks, and Cam would be ridiculous.

Mel Kiper released his first 3-round A grades for each team, so not really a mock but I guess it could happen:

For non-insiders:
quote:
New Orleans Saints Top needs: OLB, LT, DE, SS, NT
Rd. 1 (15) LB Manti Te'o, Notre Dame Rd.
3 (75) OLB Jamie Collins, Southern Miss
Analysis: If you're curious as to why I'd take Te'o in Round 1, it has a lot to do with how the board sets up, and how the defensive depth chart sets up. The Saints need to upgrade the talent on defense, period. The pass rush in the 3-4 is of particular concern. However, with Jarvis Jones, Dion Jordan and Barkevious Mingo off the board, I'm reaching if I target an OLB at that slot. Pretty badly, in fact. Next, the defensive line at least has some youth. The Saints used their first pick on presumptive starter at NT Akiem Hicks last year. And they used a first-rounder on Cameron Jordan the year before. So it was either a corner or a linebacker, and the cornerback value is also not good at No. 15. So Te'o is the pick, providing an immediate starter, and the chance to move some people around to maximize the unit. Later, I grab an extremely productive 3-4 OLB in Collins. With 20 tackles for a loss last season, Collins was disruptive and could be a useful pass-rusher even as a rookie.
I'm sorry but if we would ever even consider taking that clown at 15, I would toss any Saints gear that I own

15. New Orleans Saints: Barkevious Mingo, DE/OLB, LSU, Junior: Making the move to a 34 defense is never easy and finding outside linebackers who can rush off the edge is paramount to the success of the unit. Mingo’s quick twitch athleticism and natural pass rush ability make him a great fit for the Saints scheme.

FOX Schrager
15. New Orleans Saints: Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State
At 6-foot-1, 210 pounds, Rhodes ran a strong 4.43 40-yard-dash at the Combine and jumps off the screen in his game tape. He’s a big, fast physical specimen who can play right from the get go. He’s somewhat raw, but he could be a nice addition to Rob Ryan’s aggressive 3-4.

Walter update
New Orleans Saints: Barkevious Mingo, DE/OLB, LSU
The Saints fired Steve Spagnuolo and announced that they are moving to a 3-4 defense. A new scheme doesn't mean they'll be able to fix their old problems, however. Despite adding Victor Butler, they still need to find a top pass-rusher to make things easier for an overmatched secondary. Barkevious Mingo makes a ton of sense here as one of the best prospects available.
*** OTHER 2013 NFL DRAFT POSSIBILITIES: ***
1. Jarvis Jones, DE/OLB - Another pass-rushing option for the Saints' new 3-4.
2. Lane Johnson, OT - The Saints could move ahead of the Chargers for the Oklahoma tackle. Sean Payton recently told the Chicago Sun-Times' Sean Jensen that he has "nightmares" about the left tackle position.
--Mingo over Jarvis Jones. Quite a few scenarios where the Saints would take whichever top pass rusher the Jets do not select. Similarly a lot of scenarios where the Saints have a choice of two top 3-4OLBs and the Steelers would take whichever one the Saints don't.

this guy is #3 overall in 5 yr mock ratings.
15. New Orleans Saints - OT Terron Armstead (Arkansas Pine-Bluff)..One of the Saints biggest needs is at the OT position since they lost OT Jermon Bushrod to the Bears in free agency...this is a little bit too high for Armstead, so look for the Saints to attempt to move down and out of this pick. Trade Down!
Team Needs - OT, NT, DE, OLB; Offense - Spread offense, Zone blocking. Defense - 3-4 scheme, Man coverage.
--surely a different name you won't see this high too much. I could imagine a stretch LT pick if the Saints had one rated close enough. History shows they stick by their big board and aren't afraid to take a name that pundits decry as a reach.

Jarvis Jones
OLB Georgia
Jr.6-2245
I'm not the least bit certain about my Saints' pick this week. Unless New Orleans has a conviction about Florida State's Menelik Watson, there's no offensive tackle who looks to be a great mid-round value and replacement for left tackle Jermon Bushrod. With Mingo gone, the Saints would have to decide if Jones carries a top-half-of-the-round grade, or if an upgrade at safety (Texas' Kenny Vaccaro, Florida's Matt Elam or Florida International's Jonathan Cyprien) is more in order? We're going with Jones given the urgent need for more edge pass rush threat in Rob Ryan's new 3-4 defense. Another scenario to watch for: If a team like the Bengals or 49ers covets West Virginia's Tavon Austin, they're going to have to trade up to at least No. 15, ahead of the No. 16 Rams, who are known to want him. That means the Saints might be presented with some trade-down possibilities, allowing them to take Watson lower and perhaps even regain the second-round selection they lost in the bounty program penalties.
-good comments, pretty solid otherwise also

We're going with Jones given the urgent need for more edge pass rush threat in Rob Ryan's new 3-4 defense. Another scenario to watch for: If a team like the Bengals or 49ers covets West Virginia's Tavon Austin, they're going to have to trade up to at least No. 15, ahead of the No. 16 Rams, who are known to want him. That means the Saints might be presented with some trade-down possibilities, allowing them to take Watson lower and perhaps even regain the second-round selection they lost in the bounty program penalties.
-good comments, pretty solid otherwise also

Damn Don. I get that you aren't certain but a pick a name
If one of the big 3 LT fell to 15, I still wouldn't like it, but I could deal with it.
If they reach for one of the 2nd tier tackles just based on need (Watson or whomever else) I'm going in to full blown rage mode

If none of the top 4 pass rushing OLBs, Star, or Richardson are available is when a trade down scenario looks more likely and better. A LT like Watson or Armstead would be value to get excited about 10 picks or so later.
draft king
15. New Orleans Saints - Jarvis Jones, DE/OLB, Georgia (6'2" 245)
The Saints have switched to a 3-4 defensive front, which makes this a good possible landing spot for Jones, who is quite possibly the biggest enigma of the elite, top-tier prospects in this year's draft. His pass-rushing skills are unquestionably strong. He faces top-flight competition and excelled, even when teams game-planned against him. The negative for him that doesn't really apply for the Saints: he's below prototype height for a 4-3 DE and overall undersized compared with some of the other elite guys.
The big concern for Jones is his diagnosis of spinal stenosis, which is an abnormal narrowing of the spinal canal. Read this write-up to find out more. The boom-or-bust potential here is huge. Southern Cal refused to clear him to play after a 2009 neck injury, which lead to his transfer to Georgia. There will be some teams that refuse to draft him based on that alone, never mind his 12½ sacks in 2012. Hypothetically he could go as high as #2 to the Jaguars or outright fall out of the first round. I daresay there are few other players, if any, who fit into that category.
-very viable mock
