the best thing for Star is that Floyd and Sheldon Richardson project higher as 4-3 DTs. The need for NTs of the 3-4 teams in front of the Saints isn't nearly as strong as that for the pass rushing OLBs.

I think there is less of the wildcard factor (as ya referenced) for Star but less demand as well. The wildcard for Jones seems to be larger but he rates higher overall. Teams will reach for these guys. We thought Bruce Irvin might have been a solid 2nd Rd pick when we had one last year. It was a recognized reach but he still went at #15. We'll still see that happen again after Irvin produced well with 8 sacks only as a role player, not every down.

PFT has us taking Keenan Allen. I'm not 100% against WR in the first, but Allen isn't really a field stretcher himself.

wonder why Werner is falling out of favor. I mean he was consistently being mocked to the Browns there for awhile it seemed.

or at least in the Top 10.

reading up on the guy, he seems like one of the safer picks in the draft. Guess these mockers don't like him on a 3-4 defense. I know he's projected as a 4-3 end but he's dipped here the past several weeks.

I would go with Ogletree in that case. I know a lot of fans think that would be a reach being that these media guys have been mocking him around 5 spots lower than us, but I don't see it as a reach at all.

totally agree. I know it appears that we are set at ILB but... ahhh... Hawthorne missed six games last year b/c he was hurt and Vilma will probably not be around much longer, plus he's had knee problems too.

Ogletree is the most talented linebacker in this year's draft, of course I'd like for us to get him. In that scenario.

If Ogletree can get past the character concerns he is a playmaker on the field. I'm no scout but my thought on him is basically Why couldn't he be a 3-4 rush OLB? Everything about him looks like he could do it to me. We talk Mingo who only 4-3 DE-ed to OLB like it is nothing. I've heard and read Ogltree inside only several times. Just don't see why?

Richardson I thought strongly of before the 3-4 switch. He's a 1st Rder as a 4-3 DT. Dunno if he can project to 3-4 at all.

Throwing in a link here...

I like Drafttek. Not absolute in all their ratings but they do have some good tools. One of my favorites is Positional Rankings. They divide them all into types like 34NTs & 43 DTs. For LBs they divide up the 34s from the 43s as well. The go so far as to divide WRs as speed receivers, big receivers, total receivers, etc.

yeah, I've really got nothing here. Kind of had the same thought about Werner since he's projected as a 4-3 DE. I don't see why he couldn't be a 3-4 OLB. He's basically the same size as Ryan Kerrigan who also was a 4-3 guy in college. But he's doing pretty good in a 3-4 for the Redskins.

kiper has him going to us in his latest mock. At first, I thought he was just being lazy as he's put a D-Lineman in just about every mock he's done for us. But the more you think about it, that is how you build a 3-4 defense anyway from the inside out.

I guess there are a few players already on the roster who we really don't know where they are going to play. I know there are depth charts for our team posted around the internet and that is nice and all, but we don't REALLY know yet. Picking Richardson would leave us thinking the same way I guess. But then I'm sure the coaches would explain where they envision him playing and by then, they would start to have to answer some other questions from the media as to where they see guys like Hicks and Bunkley playing. My guess is Bunkley would be a nose tackle, not exactly sure on Hicks.

edit: I've read some on Richardson. The scout at Pro Football Weekly thinks he's a scheme versatile guy. take that fwiw but Nolan Nawrocki is a respected guy I would think. He did make a huge stink on his analysis on Cam Newton though.

NFP Lande

15. New Orleans Saints: Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri, Junior: Although they lack experience, sources tell us that the Saints like OLB’s Martez Wilson and Junior Galette to be their outside pass rushers. Cameron Jordan is perfectly suited to man one DE spot in the Saints new 34 defense and Richardson would be an excellent fit playing at the other one

--don't think a lot of this one. added cuz Lande was a scout. and the mocks have been a little dry lately.

First thing I look at in mocks is who they have the Saints passing on. This one has 3 QBs going before #15 but the Saints passing on Dion Jordan (17) and Jarvis Jones (29). Can't see either of them that low or being passed on. I added as well cuz we were just discussing Richardson. He also forwards the thought that he is not a 23 NT but DE. That's another I can't see- a 34DE at #15?.

if Floyd some how dropped that far then yeah, I could see it

but ahhh... that ain't happening brother.

I haven't really read much about Richardson. He played a couple of years in JUCO and had just one solid season at Missouri it looks like. That was about the same route Nick Fairley went only he dominated the season before he declared.

Richardson wouldn't surprise me.. neither would Werner I think I'm starting to lean towards the players that haven't been on our radar. I'm not throwing them my vote so don't get me wrong because I hope for Jones or MAYBE even Mingo.

Ogletree is my pipe dream but I don't see that happening. We seemed to be set at ILB but I don't like the depth there at all. Vilma is getting older and has had knee problems in the past.

15 OLB-DE Barkevious Mingo LSU Jr. 6-4 241
In our first round, the Saints have their choice between pass-rushing outside linebackers who have an SEC track record of production: Mingo or Georgia's Jarvis Jones. Both should come off the board in the teens, but we'll give the Saints and new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan the former LSU Tiger to hasten New Orleans' switch to the 3-4 front.

---a favorable scenario that looks very plausible. I go Jones myself butcha never know.

duuno how much of an insider he is but posting just cuz it doesn't look out of whack crazy-

nfl drfat insiders

15. New Orleans Saints- DE/OLB-Jarvis Jones, Georgia

Jarvis Jones is an extremely explosive and very physical complete linebacker who falls to the at the middle of the first round for medical concerns (spinal stenosis). He’s a sure-fire steal for the Saints and adds much-needed young talent to the defense.

Round One Pick 15: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, Louisiana State University
The Saints announced earlier in the offseason that they are moving to a 3-4 defense, and with the hiring of Rob Ryan, that all but ensures that they will be in 2013. The Saints have pretty much no pass rush as guys like Will Smith and Cameron Jordan didn’t produce much in 2012, and neither is a fit at Outside Linebacker anyways. Barkevious Mingo would be a perfect fit in Ryan’s defense to be that edge rusher whose main priority is to just fly off the ball and get after the quarterback. Mingo didn’t produce as many sacks in 2012, but if you wacth the tape, you see that he wasn’t asked to get after the quarterback as much as he was in 2011. Mingo has all kinds of potential, and could be a major steal at 15.
Round Three Pick 75: David Amerson, CB/FS, North Carolina State
Prior to the 2012 college football season, David Amerson was herald as one of the best, if not the best Cornerbacks in this year’s draft. Some poor performance and injury concerns have dropped him into mid-2nd to 3rd round consideration, but he still has the potential to be a quality player, and would fit nicely at Free Safety for the Saints.
Round Four Pick 109: Brandon Jenkins, DE/OLB, Florida State University
Had Brandon Jenkins come out in the 2012 NFL Draft, he likely would have been a 1st or 2nd round selection, but due to a bad Lisfranc injury that took him out of all of the 2013 season, he falls in this year’s draft. Jenkins flashed a lot of really good potential in his 2011 tape, and looked like a perfect fit at 3-4 OLB. Paired with Mingo, the Saints could have a deadly duo at OLB, much like the Steelers had with Harrison and Woodley.
Round Five Pick 144: Blidi Wreh-Wilson, CB, University of Connecticut
Wilson is one of my sleepers at the Cornerback position in this year’s draft, as he didn’t play a lot of great competition, but still had some quality tape. He will need a year or two to adjust to the speed and intensity of the NFL game, but if he gets coached up and gains some strength in an NFL strength and conditioning program, he has the potential to be a starting corner.
Round Six Pick 183: Kevin Reddick, ILB, University of North Carolina
Kevin Reddick was regarded by many as a mid 2nd to 3rd round pick coming into this year’s college footbacll season, but due to some poor play, he has fallen down amny draft boards. Reddick would be a nice rotational guy for the Saints for his first few years as he adjusts to the NFL game, but could become a starter if he gets proper coaching and works hard enough.

McShay has an update with it being Ogletree. Someone with insider access can put the others.

Prolly said above, but Ogletree might be a slight reach at 15 but one I could be on board with. Similar to Jones, if he checks off cleanly in the non-football issues then he goes up a few notches on your big board. He stands out to me when you are talking defensive "playmakers".

McShay Mock 4.0 updated March 28th

KC- Luke Joeckel
JAX- Dion Jordan
OAK- Geno Smith (have since traded for Matt Flynn)
PHI- Eric Fisher
DET- Ziggy Ansah
CLE- Dee Milliner
ARI- Lane Johnson
BUF- Chance Warmack
NYJ- Barkevious Mingo
TEN- Shariff Floyd
SD- Star Lotulelei
MIA- Jonathon Cooper
TB- Tavon Austin
CAR- Sheldon Richardon
NO- Alec Olgetree

here is his comment on the Ogletree pick:

quote:

Analysis: Improving the pass rush is New Orleans' top priority on defense, but it would be a mistake to take OLB Jarvis Jones at this point. Ogletree might not be a perfect fit in the Saints' new 3-4 scheme, but he covers more ground than any other linebacker I can recall. He is an explosive, sideline-to-sideline run-defender, and he can bring the heat when turned loose on the blitz. It's rare to find that kind of impact player in the middle of the first round, and if presented with the opportunity, the Saints would be wise to seize it.

I like Ogletree and all but I can't believe some of the shite I'm reading about Jones. Notice the bolded portion.

I do think it would be a reach at #15 for Ogletree but I'd love to have him. Seems like a three down linebacker to me who can cover and would upgrade our team speed on defense tremendously.
