Zach Lowe Tuesday column/10 Things he likes and doesn't like

Doesn't Like:

quote:

Pierre the Pelican

quote:

It looks like a mascot Dr. Frankenstein would assemble in a Saw-style basement dungeon out of parts from leftover dead mascots.

Likes:

quote:

Anthony Davis's pick-and-roll dribbling

quote:

and a lot of pick-and-rolls unfold in such a way that the big man catches the ball on the move in an awkward in-between area. If he can't do much with the ball from there, the offense usually has to reset.

quote:

But the Brow has honed the off-the-bounce skills he flashed last season, and he's making something of those in-between plays

Crushed that Lowe doesnt like Pierre. He has been great at pumping up the Pellies this summer and has shown a ton of interest in the franchise.

"Papa Pellie praises Pelicans PF; passes on Pierre."

Should have been the thread title

I couldn't bring myself to use it Fear. I'm still unsure, but Lowe has basically worn me down.

Some quotes that are indirectly relevant to us:

quote:

Larry Coon's analysis at ESPN.com has shown restricted free agents to be among the league's most overpaid player types, in terms of bang-for-the-buck production. Rival teams who want to lure them away have to submit salary figures onerous enough to dissuade the incumbent team from matching — contracts that often include extra goodies like trade kickers and accelerated payment schedules.

This kind of calls into question the value in trading for players in the final year of a contract prior to RFA.

quote:

In other words: There will be suitors lurking everywhere for the Haywards and Monroes of the league. Team executives love to joke that "it only takes one a-hole" to force a team into overpaying its own restricted free agent. The league would now seem to be filled with more potential assholes than a bar in New York's financial district at 6 p.m.

There are real consequences to making an offer that is matched, your cap apace is locked for 3 days. What RFA hasn't been matched recently? And I'm not counting the S&Ts the Hornets/Pelicans have done. Those deals don't lock your cap space for 3 days before finding out you missed. The Poison Pill offers Houston did for Asik/Lin are the only ones coming to mind and those only happened because of Poison Pill Arenas Rule that is uniquely available to players with 2 years or less in the league. You couldn't Poison Pill Pekovic, you'd have had to throw a max deal at him, hope Minny didn't match, and then hope you didn't screw yourself by giving him a Max.

Zach Lowe sucks. He doesn't write anything worth a damn anymore. He's just working at getting a front office job like Priuti.

Zach Lowe is awesome - if I were an NBA writer Id be very much like him. Coming up with "Pellies" is epic and seeing how pissed off it makes people really gives me a good chuckle one or two times per week.

Fingers still crossed for his uniforms/court design rankings.

You'll need a pretty powerful genie to make that wish come true.
