No offense, but if this board was GM, we wouldn't land or bring back one player this summer. There is a BILLION cap dollars out there and 500 million more coming next year. And there are like 7 good free agents, 10 solid starters beyond that, and a bunch of meh guys. That money is going to be spent

Any idea of how much the MLE will be this year? I don't think it's tied to the average player salary anymore, but surely it will increase quite a bit.

Yes. If you listen to the podcast, what happened is the Nets gave him that offer. Their thinking (Pelton) was to sign potential guys on reasonable deals and then play them a ton with the hopes that they have trade value down the line
And that makes a ton of sense for a team like Brooklyn because they aren't using their space on anyone good over the next two years anyway and they have nearly 60 million to spend
What I think could happen with Frazier is we use all our cap space and then a team comes in and gives him a deal starting at 100K over the room exception. Then, we can't match

It doesn't rise with the cap. I thin k it is $5.6M

If Tim Frazier got all of Norris Cole's minutes in the latter part of last year, the Pels make the playoffs. Fact.

So who gets the bigger contract Ish or Frazier?

Is there a larger back up PG farm in all of the league over the last several seasons then the Pelicans haha? It's pretty crazy when you sit back and look at it:
Darren Collison
Grevis Vasquez
Brian Roberts
Austin Rivers
Ish Smith
Tim Frazier
And sort of revitalized the careers of
Tony Douglas
Norris Cole
Jarret Jack
Nothing incredible but guys that have stuck around now and gotten decent contracts given where they came in at. Just wish we could find one SF gem instead of mostly big men and guards.

To me, more than anything, that says that you should never pay for a backup guard. If Frazier gets a solid, multi year offer-- bye, bye. Next guy will be on his way for the minimum and will do just fine
Posted on 6/29/16 at 3:33 pm to Crewz
Agreed.
If there is one thing we have figured out as an organization it's how to scout backup point guards.
Frankly if I were a team like Milwaukee I would be trying to bug our scouting offices or poach some of our scouts lol.

For those who are unaware, most teams will not have access to the full MLE. Because of the huge cap jump, most teams will at least have a little cap space, thus only having access to the cap room exception (Crewz made reference to this earlier) Once they hit the cap.

Good. He's not the perfect "Gentry System" PG because he doesn't have the shooting ability to stetch the defense out but he fits every other checkbox.

Idk about that. We've seen the importance in having a capable backup PG. GS's bench is killer in large part due to Livingston being one of the bests backup PGs in the league. I agree with your premise that I wouldn't pay $$$ for one, but if you can obtain one for a reasonable deal, it's worth it IMO. For every Frazier (assuming he continues his play) there's a Tony Douglas or over the hill Steve Blake. Those guys come in and lose leads like it's job. I think with having Jrue, it's even more important to have another PG to give Jrue quality rest.

We're a PG farm like ATL has been a SF farm

I think in our situation though we just don't have the luxury of matching a 5-6 million dollar deal for a guy like Frazier. And since we have had success almost every season finding a Tim Frazier esque backup, its the place I would personally not want to sink too much money into.
We need a starting caliber SF and some quality depth at a couple other positions. If for nothing else injury insurance.
Plus we will likely still have Evans on the roster most, if not all of the season. So in all likelihood Gentry is gonna be like Portland and have Jrue or Evans - his two starting guards - handling the facilitation duties most of the game by staggering their minutes. Or so I would imagine. So while I really like Tim Frazier and think he has a solid future as a role player, I am not sure it is wise to pay that much too keep him.

Austin Rivers plans on talking with Clippers, several teams when free agency opens tomorrow night, per source.
Rivers looking at big pay raise, maybe $8 million per season, increase from the $3.3 million he made last season with Clippers, per source.
