The Pelicans have set themselves up very nicely for next offseason

The key is Cousin's bird rights, but it would possibly require us to go into the luxury tax.
We currently sit at $6 mil in cap space, but can easily get over the $20 mil mark by shedding Asik and Ajinca's contracts. The two contracts become extremely valuable next year, as both expire and combine to $16.5 mil. They could be useful in a sign-and-trade or just an outright salary dump.
With approximately $23 mil in a deep free agent class, the Pelicans can gain another high quality player to pair with Holiday/Davis/Cousins. It puts us in play for a guy like Avery Bradley or a RFA like Norman Powell, maybe Reddick.
The key is keeping the cap manageable for next summer, and not taking on way more salary this year to be the fifth seed instead of the sixth seed.
Maybe I am being too optimistic because I am having withdrawals from not seeing the team play in three months, but if Dell/whoever ends up running the team, hold steady they could definitely lift the team into a contender.

Well put, i agree completely. Also if were decent but not in like the top 10 of the lottery by the AS break id absolutely assume we will be dangling our 1st plus other assets (maybe cook or diallo + fillers) to maybe rob another team of a solid piece.

Very good insight
I would love to put another semi-stud backcourt player to pair with Jrue the year after this upcoming season.

Having a player's Bird Rights does not mean that the player counts for zero on your cap. DC will still have a 27 mil cap hold next season.
AD-~25
Holiday-~25
Cousins-~27
Solo+Moore-~20
You're at 97 mil with just those 5 players next offseason, and over the cap even if you trade away all other guaranteed contracts (Ajinca and Asik). The Pels won't be a player in next season's free agency.

OP's numbers aren't adding up unless we carry a 6 man roster

dead right on the cap hold for Cousins. and he's probably getting a 30% max, so bump that up to ~$30M. if they want to keep this core going, they're a tax team
op may be right that maybe a deal can be swung w/ expirings, but it's likely in exchange for taking back longer term $$ from the other team.
that's sort of the hope anyway- be good enough to catch attention of a star in a worse spot and then try to swing a deal for that guy. problem is, Dell ain't Morey and his asset portfolio is weak

If the Pels carried Ajinca and Asik for the year than they could probably next offseason find a suitor to send out their salaries to find a slightly over paid contributing role player on a long contract.

Moore, Diallo, and Jackson may end up having decent value in a season in a league full of inflated contracts. They also have all their future picks currently.

true. Diallo has a chance to gain some value across the league. not sure how much Jackson will play though. nor how much value Moore has to a team moving on from a star player
they can move picks, but that keeps them in this loop of having no young talent on cheap, undervalued contracts to balance out the top heavy roster (and/or be moved in future trades)

With AD/Cousins/Jrue soon to take up $90M and Solo/Moore at $20M we are not getting another big contract. If we trade for anybody it would be to get a rookie scale contract. At this point we really need to start developing talent in house to try to find contributing players like the Warriors/Spurs do.

This is why you KEEP Diallo.

Diallo better not be going anywhere.

Diallo is expendable if we keep Cousins. He and AD will log majority of the minutes. If you can use him in a package to get a guard or wing in return, you do it without blinking

With what money?
We need a 3rd big on a cheap rookie contract that can produce.
Diallo is that...

You trade X player on X contract, you get X player in return that matches the money.

Diallo is on a 1.3 mill a year contract.
What guard is worth that, that is worth taking on?
We would have to give up a good prospect and Etuan Moore to get something meaningful....if that.

You attach him to another contract. Depends on who what where and when
