Fwiw, take anything Bucher says with a grain of salt, but:
quote:

The love for all things Louisiana by Pelicans owner Tom Benson and his wife, Gayle, is well-known. That could be why the hot rumor circulating around the league right now is that if Benson decides the team is not meeting expectations and makes changes, he will bring in two Louisiana natives as replacements—former Detroit Pistons GM Joe Dumars and former Nets/Mavericks head coach Avery Johnson.
Dumars has been traveling overseas and making observational visits to various NBA teams since stepping down from the Pistons last spring after a 14-year run that included six Eastern Conference Finals appearances, two Finals appearances and a championship in 2004. He was born in Shreveport and is a McNeese State alumnus.

Johnson has been working as a television analyst since being fired by the Nets midway through the 2012-13 season. He was born in New Orleans and finished up his college career at Southern University in Baton Rouge.

There is no confirmation from Pelicans sources that any definitive dissatisfaction with either GM Dell Demps or head coach Monty Williams exists, or that Dumars or Johnson have been contacted about their interest in returning to their native state. LINK

dumars and avery

Other than the josh smith move, what had dumars done wrong? I know nothing about his career but his resume seems better than most GMs in the league

If we hire Avery.... I swear

People that hate on Dumars are clueless. Dude built some good teams and has the skins on the wall to prove it. If you wanted an experienced GM, he'd be worth a look. I'd rather a young up and comer, though

Avery, meh. There are too many better coaches out there

i know how down this board is on both, but i've read other boards that are slightly upset with monty but not to the point of wanting him fired and also have a number of friends who feel the same way. it wouldn't surprise me if the powers that be aren't ready to fire either quite yet. i think if you fire one, you have to fire the other, though.

I looked at the coaches the other day in Detroit under Dumars and it really is like night and day. Player moves were the same way. The question is which GM would you get, the one that built a champion or the one that lost it?

Can someone check on Fun Bunch? He may have hit his head when he rage fainted.

A few years ago I would have loved if the Pelicans would have picked up Brad Stevens. I know he hasn't done much in Boston, but he has had a terrible roster to work with. Who is a up and coming coach we could grab like him?

Hell I think Brad Stevens is overachieving with the crap roster he has in Boston.

This is the time to make the run and we're stumbling. If they don't beat the Grizz tomorrow to get back on track, the margin for error gets razor thin.

Shaka Smart might be even more coveted around the country than Stevens was.

Personally, I don't believe this rumor. I don't think Benson could pick Avery or Dumars out of a lineup. So this pick will ultimately be up to Loomis and co. I don't believe for a second that they would pick a couple guys because they're from Louisiana.

Didn't he throw money at Gordon and Villanueva too?

His first several years were great. How many GMs have assembled a championship team without a superstar? In NO he'd have at least one superstar. He gave Rick Carlisle his first HC job and landed Larry Brown. Flip Saunders wasn't a terrible hire either.

My guess is that the Gordon, Villanueva and Smith signings were more out of desperation than anything, but they were obviously terrible moves. I don't think those moves define him as a GM more than his first several years on the job, though. Darko was the right pick for that team in 2003, too.

We've seen the same "signals intelligence", both have familiarity with ownership/management. If I were guessing/making up a rumor on who Benson's first choice was, this narrative writes itself. I wonder who Dumars would pick as the coach though. He picked more older "lifer coach" types than recent former player types LINK

I checked the Saints website just to see the type of guys Loomis targets. Whether they're lifer-types or more new school...in-house or if he picks from other organizations.

Basically everybody in management has been there over a decade, so its tough to read.

The "newest" guy seems to be Khai Harley who has a really interesting statistics background. He'd be the type of GM i'd hope Loomis would look for with the Pelicans

I mean ideally I wouldn't want Avery Johnson since there are better options, but he isn't half bad.

4 years in Dallas, worst drtg was 11th, worst ortg was 8th.

He had less with the nets than monty does with the pels and his worst dtg was 109.9. Monty was 110.1 twice. 108.1 this year.

Stevens really came out of nowhere with those Butler teams. If we looked at college, Shaka Smart and Fred Hoiberg are two of the hottest names. There is a young coach in the D-League I was reading about, can't recall his name... But he's supposed to be legit and that would be out of nowhere

In regards to the Ben Gordon and Villanueva signings by Dumars, that's not really on him. Gordon was regarded as one of the top, young SGs in Chicago. Dude just flopped after getting paid a la our Gordon. A lot of teams were willing to pay Ben Gordon. Villanueva was also coming off a career year during his contract year and at the time was thought to be a legit PF. He flopped after getting paid and fooled a lot of people. Another guy a lot of teams wanted.
