TBW: Tobias Harris the answer?

He was talked about on here about a month ago and David Fisher just put out a nice article on a potential "dream" offseason.

Starts with Tyreke to CLE for haywood/24
Could get down with that.

Sometime between now and the draft I hope the Pelicans work out the above mentioned trade. With the 24th pick I would select Virginia swingman Justin Anderson. I already professed my desire for Anderson at the end of May and nothing has come up to change that opinion. In my opinion he projects as a bigger 3&D option along with Quincy Pondexter; one who can more credibly defend small forwards while Pondexter chases the Kyle Korver's and Klay Thompson's of the league.
Two prominent mock drafts, for CBS Sports (Sam Vecenie on 6/18) and Draft Express (6/19 version), have the Pelicans selecting Wyoming forward Larry Nance Jr. with the 56th pick. Nance, the son of Larry Nance who won the NBA's first dunk contest, is a long and wiry power forward with a nose for defense. Draft Express notes that he was selected as co-Defensive Player of the Year and 1st Team All-Defense in the Mountain West Conference this year. What jumps out to me is his proficiency at the foul line (a career 77% free throw shooter) in addition to those physical tools; 7'1.5" wingspan and a 37.5" vertical leap.

Brendan Haywood's contract comes into play heavily at this point. Utilizing it as a trade chip in a sign-and-trade for restricted free agent Tobias Harris allows the Pelicans to maintain all of their valuable exceptions to bring in other players while maintaining restricted rights to Jeff Withey and Norris Cole. Harris would immediately slot into the starting small forward spot. Essentially the Pelicans trade Tyreke Evans, who is a poor fit at small forward, for a project 3&D player (Justin Anderson) and a starting caliber small forward with small ball four potential in Harris.
What does Harris bring? He's a finisher more than a distributor. He averaged just more than a pass per minute in Orlando last season according to NBA Stats, right around the same number that Ryan Anderson did. Harris is a bigger body at 6'8" and 223 pounds at the NBA Combine (in 2011) according to Draft Express. He is an excellent rebounder at the small forward spot and is a threat to make open 3-pointers, as this video demonstrates.
quote:
Notice that every 3-pointer Harris makes is in the corner where he spaces the floor beautifully. Tobias was deadly from the corners this season, posting an impressive 66.3% eFG% there on 104 attempts. His release is compact and quick, and he does well getting his feet under him before the ball arrives.

Despite committing so much money to Anthony Davis, Tobias Harris, and Omer Asik this summer the Pelicans would still have oodles of cap space next summer. All while actually having a solid group of rotation players to build around the new arrival. Creating max level space, for a player such as Kevin Durant, would require a significant trade or two to slough off some salary but could be done.
The depth chart next year would be chock full of long 6'5" to 6'8" athletes who can actually shoot the basketball behind the three point line. Rookies Justin Anderson and Larry Nance Jr. would not be asked to lift a heavy load; but instead would push players in practice while player development coaches refined their skills. Small ball lineups would have a great deal of flexibility. Want to really open the lane for AD to go to work? Jrue Holiday, Eric Gordon, Harris, Ryan Anderson, and Davis fit the bill. Need to lock down defensively? Holiday, McDaniels, Pondexter, Harris, and Davis will do nicely.
Ultimately it is that flexibility that I hoped to build with this roster. Now we wait for Dell Demps to do something else entirely in the next couple weeks.
Could get down with that.

Demps has made significant moves every offseason. I don't know how realistic this is, but just adding the MLE doesn't match Demps' history.

I completely agree. He always gives fans something to be excited about, regardless of whether or not you agree with the roster moves.

I just don't know how Harris fits defensively on the wing. Though, if you think that Gentry will move Davis to the 5 in crunch time, Harris as a small ball 4 is a very good fit. That also gives you the freedom to move Anderson for help somewhere else. Honestly, Harris as a Boris Diaw type 6th man fits better than Anderson does.

In past offseasons, he has had space and/or assets though.
Last year, he only added a guy who was slated to be the 5th or 6th best player on the team. Adding a 7th best player with the MLE and re-signing the 6th wouldn't be all that different.
Especially if he already has given us the exciting/big move - a new coach who will use the pieces he already acquired in the past the way he wants them to be used.

Tobias is the guy that I've been saying for months now makes the most sense if Dell makes a big move.
Long, position versatile, can run, an RFA (fits in Dell's past). I just don't know if I see us making a big move.

A realistic move doesn't seem likely. I don't understand why Cleveland would take on Evans. Kevin freaking Love was turned into a spot up shooter with Kyrie/LeBron. What in the world does Evans bring if he isn't dominating the ball?
Maybe Cleveland is bluffing about running it back and moves on from Love and is interested in bringing in Anderson to replicate his shooting? Then you can get to S/T for Harris.
Another question, is Orlando going to let Harris get away?

I think the bigger question in this scenario is whether the cavs would actually do this trade. they needed playmaking in the playoffs but Irving and love were hurt. Could they play Irving and Evans together? What about Evans and smith? Or Evans and delly?
I know they played ISO heavy but this would really be a leap of faith for them. On the other hand lebrons track record with recruiting vets to play with him is spotty at best (ray allen excepted).
by the by, Harris was picked with our draft pick. It was traded to Portland for...(drum roll)...jerryd bayless

There have been a lot of reports saying they don't want to Max him out. They supposedly have about a $12-$13 million limit.

What about Evans and Smith?
If Dumb gets you beat, I'm not sure what JR and Reke together do.

J.R is way dumber than tyreke imho.
He baffled me.

Or the Cavs can just go and get Harris themselves
Posted on 6/21/15 at 10:49 am to GynoSandberg
right
if in this scenario the magic would trade Harris for wrights contract from us, why wouldn't they just trade him to the cavs for wright/24? all of this assumes the cavs would rather have Evans than Harris
I appreciate the authors creativity but this seems like fairy dust

Who is Wright?
Harris doesn't really fit for the Cavs if they keep Love, they need another guard more than another forward.
I agree that this is a pipe dream though.

Harris will make 3-4 mil more than reke
Could be the difference on a luxury team.
There's also the Love situation.

While Tyreke as a 6th man would work, if I were Cleveland I'd want Jarrett Jack over Tyreke. Can create his own shot and play off ball and costs less both in salary and acquisition.

I say roll with the pieces we have now and try to get a superstar next off-season.

I didn't see Ajinca in his scenario. Is he gone?
