Pondexter had hoped a cartilage replacement would be the thing he needed to help him move past his chronic knee issues. Instead surgery #3.

I feel like even if he ever does come back, it is probably unrealistic to think he will be anywhere close to the same player he was for us.

Feels like typical Pelicans luck though. You found a great value player Pelicans? How about the basketball gods require of him three knee surgeries and see how valuable he is then??

Insurance should end up paying 80% of his salary this year, $2.9 million. If they keep Tyreke and his insurance money that's $5.5 million. That offsets a lot of lost ticket sales if keeping Demps is a bottom line decision.

Is there any offsetting cap relief possibilities in situations like this?

If not it seems like something the CBA needs to address.

So we would never just waive or buy him out cause we are collecting his insurance?

They could do a medical retirement and he'd be off the books next year, Minnesota is starting the process on that for Pekovic.

Thanks. I assume that would require Q-pon to consent to that?

Which is probably hard given these are competitive people that likely don't like to feel like they quit on something or left unfinished business.

Yep. I wanted to make a joke about this when I saw the news but at this point its hard to see him ever recovering fully. Sucks

That's what it sounded like happened with Pekovic, although all Larry Coon's salary cap faq seems to indicate is that the team files for an exception and whether it's granted or not is determined by a league and union appointed doctor. LINK

If QPon retired now he'd have to wait an entire year to get reinstated in the league if he thought he could play again. If he thinks he's not finished it would be hard to agree to that.

He's still got another year on his contract, you can't just cut him.
