And if you have multiple choices and Thibs thinks he can use Orlando to jack up his price you let him go to Orlando. With Demps' contract situation this hiring needs to be on the Pel's terms.

But wouldn't Thibs be the safest bet? The transition from College to pros has not had a high success rate for coaches. Different philosophies aside, at least we know what we are getting with him.

If the Pels don't hire Thibs, it won't be because they are cheap. It will mean either they want someone else or they simply don't want Thibs at some number they consider irresponsible.

This doesn't have to be about money, I wonder how long of a contract Demps is authorized to offer. He's got 1 year and a team option left. If you miss the playoffs next year you don't want the new GM to be stuck with a failed coach he didn't pick for 3 more years.

I'm not saying thibs' camp isn't putting this rumor out there, but what would his advantage be in doing so? Orlando already wants him. It seems as though putting the rumor out there that the Pelicans, who are reportedly orlandos biggest competition in signing Thibs, aren't interested in signing him would only reduce Thibs' bargaining power when negotiating with Orlando.

Maybe he's not interested in Orlando. At the very least he wants us instead of Orlando and we don't seem to have that mutual interest. At least when it comes to compensation.

No way in Hell should we give up anything for a coach, we do that enough with players.

Another potential source is the Bulls. Thibs is the top choice and they refuse to fire him without compensation and put pressure on the Pels by making them look cheap.

People seem to forget how terrible he was before Sean Payton.

A long time ago, im guessing about 10 years, ESPN did a special ranking the owners of the NFL and I remember Benson being dead last

This is also the guy who wanted the Saints to move after Katrina

He is a terrible Owner, but has deep pockets

P.S If they saying Thibs may be to expensive that might mean we are already in talks with Thibs, and deciding how much money will we spend and how much money will Orlando throw at him to sway him away from us

Tom Benson has doubled the market value of the Pels in the 3 years that he has owned them and has a player on the roster that has the potential to be the GOAT. I highly doubt he or his fianancial ppl are going to let a little thing like money get the way. Thibs is only getting paid $4.3million in Chicago anyway LINK

Terrible owner? He might have had faults pre-Katrina and right after, but since 2006 he has done everything right. He spent what it took to get the Saints a SB and we would have won another if our defense could have held vs the 49ers in Jan 2012. He also bought the Pels when he could have very easily left them leave town or continue to flounder with an out of town owner that didn't know how to market and make a team profitabble. I give Gale the credit for making Benson change his attitudes about NOLA and it is just another reason he kicked that Tejas native and Aggie out of the ownership.

All the evidence for the last 9 years with the Saints and last 3 with the Hornets/Pelicans points to him willing to spend, although not very wisely at times. However, lets just ignore that and point to what he did 10-20 years ago.

A lack of will to spend $ will not be a problem.

fear, you actually have "good" days?

Anyway, that loss to SF still hurts. The SB was there for the taking.

Pels fans should revolt if they blow this hire because of cheapness.

Benson didn't have much to do with either of these things. But he certainly bought in at the perfect time.

That said, if we focus just on his NBA ownership, he's shown a commitment to spend. He took on $80M in Holiday/Evans when it would have been easier to sit tight with picks/cheaper options. He took on Asik's funky, bloated salary this year. He's invested in scouting and in the front office in ways that didn't exist under Shinn. They are going to offer Davis as much as possible for as long as possible. They have been happy to spend since he bought the team.

No one knows what Thibodeau is asking for ($$, power, etc), whether the Pels are even interested, what the Pels are prepared to pay, and if Chicago is demanding compensation.

He's an outstanding coach. Yet I dont think he's worth $7M/year. I don't think they should give up picks for him either.

Kyler ended up kind of hedging his statement, saying he meant Thibs might be too expensive when you add draft pick compensation + his new contract. Not necessarily that Benson wouldn't pay the money

Fwiw, he also says the Pelicans were on the phone making calls about the new HC the day after they fired Monty, as opposed to Orlando who he says hasn't contacted anyone yet.

Chicago must have some really good leakers if they want people to believe it's going to take a first. Laughable. It's going to take nothing because they have no leverage whatsoever.

If Thibs is smart he just keeps saying "I will not want to coach for a team I'm traded to. Do not trade me. I'm the coach of the Bulls. However if you want to part ways I will except a buyout. "
